NTT Com’s Asia-Oceania Backbone Expands to 500 Gbps

Leading-class Network for Reliable Data Transmission in Asia

TOKYO, JAPAN – NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it has expanded the data-transmission capacity of its Global IP Network between Asia and Oceania to 500 gigabits per second (Gbps). The new capacity, equivalent to approximately 29,762 channels of digital terrestrial television or 428 years’ worth of content in a daily newspaper, further enhances the company’s leadership in trans-Pacific Tier-1 IP connectivity.

NTT Com’s global IP backbones, which provide IP network services to Japan, Asia, Europe, Oceania and other markets worldwide, are connected to fixed and mobile telecom companies, Internet service providers (ISPs), data center operators and content providers. The company’s largest cable network, which offers an industry-leading 630 Gbps between Japan and the United States, uses a dual-stack (IPv4 and IPv6) configuration as one of NTT Com’s core IPv6 networks.

The growing use of smartphones, tablet devices and broadband access has led to sharp increases in music/video downloading, blogging, social networking and cloud computing worldwide. Increasing data traffic volume in Asia has been further boosted by economic expansion and the entry of major U.S. content providers.

NTT Com has implemented a number of initiatives to facilitate the fast, stable data transmission of increasing data traffic, including launching the Asia Submarine-cable Express, a low-latency, highly reliable undersea cable connecting major cities in Asia, and offering strengthened security to prevent DDoS attacks. The company also is assisting the initiatives of IT-related government agencies in emerging countries, such as providing consultation to support ISP transition to IPv6 and access to the global Internet. NTT Com has rapidly increased its data-transmission capacity between Asia and Oceania by nearly tenfold, from 53 Gbps in 2007 to an industry-leading 500 Gbps.

NTT Com Global IP Network Background

NTT Com launched the precursor of its current Global IP Network Service with a 45-megabits-per-second (Mbps) service in 1997. U.S.–Japan bandwidth was dramatically increased to 1 Gbps when the company acquired Verio and its Tier-1 IP backbone in 2000. NTT Com became the first network provider to measure network-latency variability with a jitter-type service level agreement (SLA) in 2005. The reliability of the NTT Com Global IP Network was capably demonstrated in December 2006 when network traffic was rerouted with minimal delay following a destructive undersea earthquake off Taiwan. In 2008, the company introduced a traffic-analysis system that monitors network traffic to detect and report traffic anomalies to IP network operators. Although the cable was damaged partially by the March 2011 earthquake, it was quickly repaired with minimum disconnection. The effort was supported by a fully redundant cable structure and collaborative efforts with multiple carriers and cable companies based on established relationships.
