Infinera, Opnext Partner for Interoperability Demo on NTT Communications Network
TOKYO and SUNNYVALE, CA, Jun 08, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN, news, filings) announced today that it has successfully completed a demonstration of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) transmission with NTT Communications over a live network. The 100 GbE transmission took place on the NTT Communications network in Makuhari, outside Tokyo. We believe that the demonstration, involving a 100 GbE signal handed off from a router to a prototype 100 GbE Infinera module in an Infinera DTN system, marks a significant step forward in the development of commercial 100 GbE technology.
The demonstration, which can be seen at the NTT Communications stand #5M26 at Interop Tokyo, used Opnext IEEE-compliant 100 GbE LR4 CFP optical transceivers in an Infinera 100 GbE module and an IP router. This is the latest in a series of Infinera demonstrations involving interoperability of 100 GbE components and systems from a range of other technology vendors.
“The Infinera system is unique in its ability to run 100 GbE services over today’s network,” said Mr. Kohei Kitade, IP Network Department of Network Business Division of NTT Communications. “Infinera’s Bandwidth Virtualization enables a wide range of services, including 100 GbE, to run over any set of available wavelengths, simplifying the deployment challenge for an operator that has already built a large network.”
“In partnership with NTT Communications, Infinera is driving towards wide interoperability and commercial standardization for 100 GbE services,” said Infinera CTO Drew Perkins. “Infinera believes that this demonstration is a first for Japan, a market where bandwidth growth is very strong and the need for next-generation services is clear.”
“Infinera’s interoperability demonstration of 100 GbE at Interop Tokyo highlights the momentum of next-generation optical transmission technology,” said Tadayuki Kanno, President of the Opnext module business unit. “Our design and manufacturing excellence and adherence to emerging standards in our 10G, 40G and 100G products enable system providers to confidently address their biggest network challenges.”
The Infinera DTN 100 Gigabit Ethernet tributary interface module in this demonstration is fully compliant with the most recent IEEE 802.3ba draft specification and CFP MSA. Infinera is working with other vendors and service providers in industry standards bodies to agree common standards for 100 GbE technology and services. Earlier this year, Infinera partnered with other router, test equipment and optical module vendors to show wide interoperability of 100GigE (see Infinera press release, Infinera Demonstrates 100 Gigabit Ethernet with Optical Vendors, March 22, 2010.)
Interop Tokyo takes place from June 9-11, 2010. More information about Interop Tokyo can be found at http://www.interop.jp/en/index.html. Infinera product and technology experts will be available at the Nissho Electronics booth #4G14 to discuss this demonstration and provide information on Infinera products and solutions.
