By leveraging virtualization, WJU increases network capacity and reliability for students, faculty, and guests
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Oct 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) —
ADTRAN(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN, news, filings), a leading provider of converged access and unified business solutions, today announced that William Jessup University (WJU) has selected ADTRAN’s virtual wireless LAN (vWLAN) solution for a campus-wide deployment at its 156-acre campus in Rocklin, California. ADTRAN’s Bluesocket 1800 series of access points (APs) are deployed in 45 locations across the campus, providing the university with centralized virtual control in the data center, security enforcement at the access point, and role-based access for students, faculty and guests.
In the last few years, William Jessup University’s student population has almost tripled in size. At the same time, the number and usage of wireless devices – smartphones, tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, etc. – have also seen tremendous growth on campus. A common issue faced by an increasing number of university IT managers is the escalating number of devices demanding high bandwidth services from the wireless network. The conventional approach would have been to add several large and expensive controllers to accommodate all the users. Instead, William Jessup University selected the ADTRAN Bluesocket vWLAN for centralized virtual control and management across the entire campus. Not a single WLAN controller was deployed, rather, WJU will operate the wireless network from a VMware(R) hypervisor using ADTRAN’s Bluesocket virtual controller. As the university hosts events such as the recent ACSI Teacher Conference in early October, the IT department is able to easily set up customized and secure guest access services to visitors. The vWLAN can not only control and manage wireless users but it can also control and manage users entering the network through wired ports.
“ADTRAN’s vWLAN solution has enabled us to scale our network as the student population and growth of devices on our campus has exploded,” said Billy Maus, Network Administrator at William Jessup University. “Unlike other solutions we have used in the past, the ease of deployment and centralized management of ADTRAN’s vWLAN solution has provided benefits in both the operational expense, and reliability of the network resulting in an improved student and faculty user experience. As we look to grow our campus even further, we look forward to continuing the relationship with ADTRAN as an integral part of our network infrastructure.”
“Today’s wireless networks are under tremendous scale pressures,” said Chris Koeneman, vice president of sales, Bluesocket Business Group, ADTRAN. “Addressing these scale pressures with bigger, wireless controllers is simply not an option. By using vWLAN, WJU is harnessing the power of virtualization and taking advantage of the investment in their data center and VMware hypervisor installation.”
