Juniper Networks Powers New Gates and Hillman Centers at Carnegie Mellon University

EX Series Switches Deliver Customer Savings of 15 Percent in Capital Expenditures, 60 Percent in Floor Space, and 70 Percent in Power

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 19, 2011—EduCause 2011, Booth #631 & 633 — Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced the completion of a campus network deployment at Carnegie Mellon University’s Gates Center for Computer Science and Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies. These facilities represent the recently completed cornerstones of the University’s renowned School of Computer Science (SCS) in Pittsburgh.

“By choosing Juniper, our initial acquisition cost was lower, our total cost of ownership is lower and our network engineering efforts are simpler and easier to perform,” said Robert Cosgrove, SCS Director of Computing Facilities. “We now provide a network service that has higher performance, is more reliable, and has greater availability than our previous system—all enabled by the combination of Juniper’s switching equipment integrated with the Junos operating system.”

Made possible by lead gifts of $20 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $10 million from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, the new Gates and Hillman centers contain 217,000 square feet of space that include classrooms, graduate and faculty offices, labs and open project spaces. The Centers further solidify the position of Carnegie Mellon New Window as an internationally ranked research university with programs in areas ranging from science, technology and business to public policy, the humanities and the fine arts.

“Networking has been central to computing at Carnegie Mellon for more than a quarter century,” said Dr. Randal E. Bryant, dean of the School of Computer Science. “Carnegie Mellon is recognized for having the world’s first fully wired, and then fully wireless, campus. Networking and networked applications are a major focus of our work, so this new network is critical to both our educational and research missions.”

Cosgrove said the backplane speed of the Juniper switches is at least twice as fast as the competitors SCS evaluated. Moreover, the Junos® operating system has provided significant operational advantages. “As we have gained more experience with Junos software, we see how the hierarchical structure of the operating system makes configuring and maintaining the switch gear easier and more intuitive.”

“Simplicity and agility are critical to next-generation networks,” said Dr. Pradeep Sindhu, CTO and vice chairman of the board, Juniper Networks, and a recipient of both master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Science from the University. “We are honored to provide a high-performance networking solution to power the research and education of tomorrow’s computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon. We look forward to helping the School of Computer Science train up-and-coming technology leaders in new, innovative ways to design future networks.”

The School of Computer Science staff deployed Juniper Networks EX8208 and EX4200 Ethernet Switches with Virtual Chassis fabric technology throughout the Gates and Hillman centers. The EX8200 line of Ethernet switches offers some of the industry’s highest wire-speed 10GbE port densities, capable of delivering up to 320 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) per slot and enabling wire-rate forwarding performance of 960 million packets per second for packets of any size. The EX4200 Ethernet Switches provide 10GbE uplink options to enable high-speed connectivity to the core-layer switches connecting all nine floors of the 217,000-square-foot building. To effectively scale as needed, Virtual Chassis fabric technology allows as many as 10 EX4200 switches to be interconnected over a 128 Gbps backplane and managed as a single device that delivers a pay-as-you-grow solution that can continue to meet the University’s network requirements over time.
