VTLWaveNet is pleased to announce that since July 2011 its international fibre route between Amsterdam and Geneva (CERN) has been successfully used by SURFnet to deploy a high speed, ultra long-haul 100Gb/s Wavelength. This is believed to be the longest 100Gb/s connection deployed as the route covers 1650 kilometres over 23 fibre spans.
VTLWaveNet turned up a layer 1 dark fibre network and deployed colocation racks along a route through The Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland to support this high speed network technology. SURFnet and CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) are now prepared for a future in which they continue to be an enabler for wide area international research collaboration through the support of high-performance data distribution and data processing.
“Our Dark Fibre product was selected by SURFnet over a number of competitor links because it has excellent Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) performance at a cost effective price,” said Dave Cribbs SVP Marketing at VTLWaveNet. “With dedicated project managers and close working relationships with our management teams, VTLWaveNet offers an implementation experience rarely matched in the industry”.
SURFnet used a Ciena ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical platform in Amsterdam and Geneva using Dual Carrier 100Gb/s PM-QPSK technology which occupies a single 50GHz channel window, creating high spectral efficiency. “This deployment clearly shows that SURFnet and its partners are able to continuously push the envelope and enable cost-efficient ultra long-haul transmission for research and education,” said Roeland Nuijts, expert in optical networks in the Network Services department at SURFnet.
ABOUT VTLWaveNet
VTLWaveNet, part of the Viatel group, focuses on the European wholesale market. VTLWaveNet combines an advanced fibre optic backbone network with metro reach into the major business centres accessing carrier houses, data centres and the main Internet Exchanges. This enables the company to offer its customers leased lines, wavelengths, Ethernet, IP-Transit, co-location and dark fibre services. Because VTLWaveNet owns the underlying infrastructure and has equipped the network with the latest high capacity optical DWDM technology and multi service platforms, it can offer these services quickly, very cost effectively, at all speeds and with all the routing and (low) latency information required.
