Bucharest Polytechnic University Implements Next-Generation Research Network, Based on Cisco Technology

New Network Serves as a Platform for National and International Research and Collaboration

BUCHAREST, Romania, September 28, 2011 – Cisco today announced the completion of a next‑generation, IP-based research network at Polytechnic University in Bucharest (UBP), based on Cisco® networking technology. With more than 22,000 students and 3,500 teachers, UBP is the oldest and one of the most prestigious engineering schools in Romania.

Bucharest Polytechnic University is putting the network at the heart of innovation and has developed a high-performance grid platform to increase research capacity and enable PhD students and teachers to collaborate more closely in national and international research projects.

Key Facts / Highlights

• The network is based on Cisco routing, switching and security solutions, including Cisco ASA 5500 firewalls and Cisco IPS 4200 Series intrusion prevention systems. The network is IPv6-ready, with the parts dedicated to IPv6 research already enabled for the new protocol.
• The implementation of the next-generation research network was carried out under the umbrella of the university’s “GEEA High Performance Multi-Core GRID Resource Center” project and was supported through the European Union’s Regional Development Fund 2007-2013. The aim of GEEA is to increase the capacity of the research networks of universities and academic institutions in Romania through the implementation of a high-performance grid center.
• Today’s research activities – including DNA construction and analysis, satellite image processing, and optimization of world-scale algorithms – require a great amount of processing and bandwidth capacity. The GEEA project addresses this by creating a powerful infrastructure of computing, storage and networking, providing researchers with 918 processing cores, 49.5 terabits of storage and a high-speed network infrastructure compatible with international CCIE topology requirements.
• The new infrastructure enables the interconnection of existing grid resources and the development of complex, high-performance applications, while enabling easier control and monitoring of resources.
• The GEEA project is directly connected to the pan-European GEANT research network through a high-speed, 10 Gbps redundant uplink. The computing power of the grid infrastructure is dedicated to international research and is open for collaboration with other universities, eventually evolving to a cloud infrastructure that will allow any researcher, anywhere, to submit research projects which will be distributed by the cloud system to multiple grids in different universities and research centers.
• The design and implementation of the new network infrastructure was completed by Cronus eBusiness, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner in Romania.
