Upgrade enables Mexican networks to access Dallas’ major content, cloud, and carrier ecosystems as cross-border traffic is expected to surge during tournament
Dallas & Mexico City, 3 June 2026. DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, has upgraded the connectivity between its locations in Mexico and Dallas in preparation for the unprecedented 6 billion-strong audience anticipated for the FIFA World Cup this summer. The upgrade was triggered by very strong demand for connectivity between the two cities, as Mexico-based networks seek simplified access to international data pathways. With the upgrade now live, DE-CIX brings together US and Mexico-based networks to enable seamless data exchange for live sports, content distribution, and enterprise solutions. DE-CIX Dallas has experienced double-digit growth in networks in the last 12 months and 30% growth in peak traffic, having recently crossed the 2 terabits per second (Tbit/s) mark. Established last year, DE-CIX Mexico connects close to 30 networks and has experienced more than 400% traffic growth since the beginning of 2026, now achieving peak levels of close to 300 Gigabits per second (Gbit/s).
Alongside streaming World Cup gameplay, the upgraded connectivity to Dallas can be used by Mexican networks for remote peering and cloud connectivity. The solution offers direct connections to content, clouds, and networks in Dallas and further afield in the US that are not currently available locally.
“The establishment of DE-CIX Mexico in 2025 was a gamechanger for Mexican connectivity, and this latest upgrade enables direct, secure, and high-bandwidth data exchange with networks across the North American continent,” says Omar Vega, Country Sales Director at DE-CIX Mexico. “This levels the playing field for Mexican Internet service providers to provide their end customers with a seamless viewing experience for streaming live sports events, as well as playing e-sports and consuming other high-definition content. And what’s true for the World Cup is also true for business: Seamless low-latency and resilient connectivity puts Mexico on the world stage and brings the world to Mexico.”
The historic 2026 World Cup tournament brings together teams from 48 participating nations and will be played across 16 cities in 3 countries – Mexico, the US, and Canada. Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey will play host to the Mexican games. Demand for tickets is massively outpacing supply – with 500 million ticket requests having been received for a total of 5 million tickets. As such, the event will primarily be viewed across the world via screens: televisions, apps, and streaming services. FIFA anticipates an unprecedented global engagement with 6 billion fans for the 104 matches.
Launched in 2025, DE-CIX Mexico recorded 24 Petabytes (PB) of traffic within its first months of operation. The IX already has a healthy mix of national and international networks, including ISPs, cloud and content networks, and CDNs, with close to 30 networks connected or connecting. DE-CIX Mexico provides a neutral, carrier- and data center-neutral platform that enables networks to exchange traffic locally, reduce latency, and improve routing efficiency. The distributed architecture between Mexico City and Querétaro enhances redundancy and resilience for ISPs, carriers, content providers, and cloud service providers operating nationwide. Direct access to DE-CIX Dallas and all DE-CIX locations in the US and globally enables Mexican networks to extend their reach internationally.
