Rising traffic demand is driving new cross-border capacity and deepening Mexico’s role in the North American interconnection ecosystem
New York, USA and Mexico City, Mexico 12 March 2026 – One year after entering the Mexican market, DE-CIX is upgrading backbone connectivity between Dallas and Mexico, strengthening North America’s interconnectivity ecosystem. DE-CIX Mexico has reached nearly 200 Gigabits per second of peak traffic, following traffic growth of around 260% in the first months of 2026 alone. With close to 30 networks connected to its distributed platform across five data centers in Mexico City and Querétaro, DE-CIX Mexico has quickly become the country’s second largest Internet Exchange, strengthening cross-border access to international and global content, cloud, gaming networks, and other CDNs not yet available locally in Mexico.
Launched in 2025, DE-CIX Mexico recorded 24 Petabytes (PB) of traffic within its first months of operation. Traffic growth has continued to accelerate in 2026, reflecting rising demand for efficient, local interconnection across Mexico’s digital ecosystem and stronger cross-border connectivity into the wider North American market. The IX already has a healthy mix of national and international networks, including ISPs, cloud and content networks, and CDNs.
DE-CIX’s direct connectivity to a diverse range of cloud service providers supports Mexican enterprises, such as Fintech companies, in reaching resources in both public and private environments in a secure, redundant, and highly available way, while also strengthening access to the broader North American digital ecosystem. The operator’s virtual Cloud ROUTER service also enables highly scalable and high performance cloud-to-cloud communication, optimizing and securing multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud scenarios.
“Our first year in Mexico confirms the strong demand for neutral, high-performance interconnection infrastructure,” says Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX. “The rapid traffic growth and rise in connected networks, making DE-CIX Mexico a critical part of the country’s infrastructure, highlight both strong interest from the local peering community and Mexico’s growing strategic role in cross-border interconnection and North America’s digital future.”
Omar Vega, Regional Sales Manager at DE-CIX Mexico, adds: “In Mexico, operators are prioritizing practical infrastructure improvements, lower latency, better routing control, and stronger resilience between key hubs. Becoming the second largest IX in the country in our first year shows that the community values a neutral and technically robust interconnection platform.”
Today, DE-CIX Mexico has close to 30 networks connected or connecting and provides a neutral, carrier- and data center-agnostic platform that enables networks to exchange traffic locally, reduce latency and improve routing efficiency. The distributed architecture between Mexico City and Queretaro enhances redundancy and resilience for ISPs, carriers, content providers, and cloud service providers operating nationwide. Direct access to DE-CIX Dallas and all DE-CIX locations in the US and globally enables Mexican networks to extend their reach internationally.
