Teams are providing real-time help in Anchorage while partnering on long-term recovery for Western Alaska communities
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – GCI employees are stepping up to support Western Alaska residents who were forced to leave their homes after Typhoon Halong. Starting October 23, GCI has opened a temporary support site at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage to help families reconnect, access supplies, and get the help they need.
In less than a week, GCI retail stores collected nearly 90 pallets of donations in support of Alaskans impacted by Typhoon Halong.
“Our employees have shown incredible compassion and dedication to our fellow Alaskans who have been displaced by Typhoon Halong,” said GCI Senior Director of Corporate Communications Megan Webb. “We’re proud to stand alongside our neighbors and provide support through the site at the Alaska Airlines Center, volunteer efforts, and partnerships that will help these communities recover and rebuild.”
Support Site Hours at Alaska Airlines Center:
- Thursday, October 23: 12 PM – 5 PM
- Friday, October 24: 9 AM – 5 PM
- Saturday, October 25: 9 AM – 5 PM
The support site’s hours for next week will be determined by community need.
GCI employees volunteered nearly 225 hours to sort and organize donations in preparation for distribution to those in need.
In the days following the storm, GCI’s retail stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Wasilla served as collection points for donations of urgently needed items to support those affected by the storm. In less than a week, approximately 90 pallets of supplies were donated through GCI stores.
“We’re very thankful to everyone who donated supplies to support those in need,” Webb added. “There were dozens of pallets stacked with donations to sort and organize, and our employees volunteered their time to get everything ready sorted and organized quickly for distribution. Their work helped make sure people got what they needed, when they needed it.”
GCI employees, many with personal ties to Western Alaska, have volunteered nearly 225 hours to sort donations and connect with families affected by the storm.
GCI is also providing generators and phone chargers to aid in the recovery efforts in Wester Alaska. The company has partnered with the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) and other organizations to support long-term recovery in the region, including a $100,000 donation to ACF’s Western Alaska Disaster Relief 2025 Fund.
