Partnership ensures seamless communication, protects critical data, reduces costs, and helps charity keep resources at the centre of its work supporting Queenslanders affected by cancer.

Macquarie Telecom, part of Macquarie Technology Group (ASX: MAQ) and Cancer Council Queensland have signed an agreement to deliver a secure and connected technology foundation across Queensland, helping the state-wide charity simplify operations, cut costs, and keep its focus on supporting families when they need it most.
Cancer Council Queensland is the state’s leading non-government organisation dedicated to research, prevention, early detection, and support services for people affected by cancer, their families, and friends. With such critical operations and sensitive data at the core of the organisation’s mission, security was a vital consideration.
In response, Macquarie Telecom deployed a Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) capabilities with Extended Detection and Response (XDR). Recognising the urgency of Cancer Council Queensland’s needs, Macquarie Telecom successfully implemented the SOC and SIEM services in just six weeks – a highly complex undertaking – delivering an immediate uplift in cybersecurity and resilience.
At the core of the agreement is a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) solution with secure access service edge (SASE) layered on top. Macquarie is also deploying Microsoft Azure cloud services, data networks, voice and mobile solutions to Cancer Council Queensland. These solutions will be critical in connecting Cancer Council Queensland’s six locations into one secure, streamlined solution that supports remote and hybrid work.
Not only does this ensure Cancer Council Queensland staff have the flexibility to deliver critical services and stay connected but also provides a secure and connected foundation as the organisation works to address the healthcare gap among regional communities by expanding telehealth capabilities and digital connectivity to reach patients in rural and remote areas.
The transformation has driven significant cost value for Cancer Council Queensland, allowing the organisation to maximise resources in research, enable better patient support, and avoiding additional headcount by relying on a single, trusted partner.
“As a non-profit, every dollar counts. We needed a partner to provide a stable IT environment and enable us to innovate in a highly competitive and rapidly changing IT landscape, without adding unnecessary costs or complexity,” said Shane Sullivan, Chief Financial Officer for Cancer Council Queensland.
“Macquarie Telecom’s ability to rapidly deliver advanced cybersecurity, a secure network, and cloud capabilities has been game changing. Most importantly, it allows us to concentrate our resources on the work that matters most – supporting those impacted by cancer.”
The agreement marks the beginning of a broader journey of digital transformation for Cancer Council Queensland, setting the foundation for AI to be leveraged to improve services and support to patients across the organisation and explore future applications in cancer detection, prevention, and treatment.
“We’re proud to stand alongside Cancer Council Queensland, helping the organisation to secure its systems and provide seamless connectivity so its focus can remain on continuing the amazing work it has done for more than 60 years,” said Luke Clifton, Group Executive for Macquarie Telecom.
“This partnership also reflects our growing strength in the not-for-profit sector, where organisations face tight budgets but still need the highest levels of data protection, connectivity, and digital innovation. For too long, many not-for-profits have believed only the big telcos could provide these solutions, which has led to huge underservicing, overcharging, and frankly digital neglect for this vital sector. This agreement shows that doesn’t have to be the reality.”
By consolidating connectivity, communications, cloud, and security services into one streamlined solution, with core IT and cybersecurity in a single, cloud-enabled platform, Macquarie Telecom has given Cancer Council Queensland a stable foundation to securely expand and innovate, while continuing its mission of helping those in the community who need it most.
