WOLVERHAMPTON BECOMES ONE OF UK’s BEST-CONNECTED CITIES AS CITYFIBRE’S PRIMARY-BUILD COMPLETES

  • Over 100,000 homes in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas now have access to the UK’s finest full fibre network, more than 90% of the city’s properties.
  • With the primary-build now completed, CityFibre will continue to work with City of Wolverhampton Council to densify and connect even more homes and businesses wherever possible.

30 July 2025: CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre network, has completed the primary-build of its full fibre network in Wolverhampton. The new network is now ‘ready for service’ to over 100,000 premises, more than 90% of Wolverhampton’s homes and most businesses. Wolverhampton is the latest city in CityFibre’s nationwide rollout, making it one of the best-connected locations in the country.

CityFibre began its rollout in Wolverhampton by connecting approximately 170 public sector sites to its full fibre network, including schools, libraries, leisure centres and council offices, with the rollout enhancing services across the city. CityFibre has since completed a further 119 connections including the City of Wolverhampton Council offices, educational buildings and Wolverhampton Homes apartment blocks.

CityFibre will now continue to explore opportunities to connect even more homes and businesses, including flats, new-build homes, business parks and homes on private roads.

Wolverhampton’s proactive approach to digital infrastructure has positioned the city as a leader in connectivity, with gigabit coverage increasing from just 2% in 2020 to 96% in 2024, thanks in part to CityFibre’s rollout.

The City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Governance and Digital, Councillor Jeszemma Howl, said: “Fast, reliable broadband is essential to modern life. As a digitally driven council, we are committed to working with partners to improve connectivity across the city.

“This investment in futureproofed digital infrastructure will help bridge the digital divide, support local businesses, spark investment, enhance public services, and ensure all our residents can thrive in an increasingly digital world.”

Full fibre networks use 100% fibre optics to carry data at light-speed all the way to and from the home and are more than five time more reliable than legacy copper-based broadbandi. CityFibre’s network offers download and upload speeds of up to 5.5Gbps and is capable of supporting symmetrical speeds of up to 10Gbps in the future.

Residents in Wolverhamptoncan enjoy affordable, gigabit-capable and reliable full fibre broadband from a range of internet service providers (ISPs) including Sky, Vodafone, TalkTalk, Giganet, and Zen. All homes passed by the network can schedule a full fibre installation within five working days of placing an order.

Charlie Kitchin, Partnership Manager at CityFibre, said: “We’re delighted to announce the completion of the latest primary-build of our full-fibre network in Wolverhampton. This rollout marks an exciting step for the city’s connectivity, which will now benefit from faster and more reliable broadband. The upgrading of this digital infrastructure will bring significant productivity and innovation benefits for the local economy.”
