RtBrick expands support for CGNAT on open switches powered by Broadcom

Operators can now deploy RtBrick’s standalone Network Address Translation solution on open switch hardware
17 March, Fremont, California RtBrick today announced an expansion to its industry-leading disaggregated routing software by adding support for Carrier Grade Network Address Translation (CGNAT) on standalone open-switches powered by Broadcom’s Qumran2c chipset. This allows operators to replace traditional, proprietary CGNAT appliances with cost-effective, high-performance open networking hardware.
CGNAT, also known as ‘NAT444’, translates large volumes of private IPv4 addresses into public IPv4 addresses, addressing today’s ongoing IPv4 exhaustion while ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for millions of users and devices.
“As IPv4 remains dominant for the foreseeable future and public addresses become scarcer, many operators must deploy CGNAT to be able to reuse IPv4 in a public space,” said Hannes Gredler, CTO and founder at RtBrick. “By bringing CGNAT to open switches, we’re giving telcos the freedom to break free from vendor lock-in, cut costs, and repurpose hardware investments as their networks evolve.”
Announced in February 2024, RtBrick was the first to deliver CGNAT as an in-line feature within its Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) software running on open switches. Now, by extending standalone CGNAT support to open switches and taking advantage of powerful, widely-adopted Broadcom Qumran2c chipset, RtBrick is offering operators a flexible, scalable alternative to traditional CGNAT devices.
“RtBrick’s innovative software leverages Broadcom’s hardware acceleration for CGNAT on open switches, revolutionizing IPv4 address management. This solution enables ISPs to serve millions of customers with limited public IPs, at a fraction of the cost of legacy appliances, while maintaining quality and integrating seamlessly with existing infrastructure,” said Oozie Parizer, senior director of marketing, Core Switching Group, Broadcom.
RtBrick has published a demonstration of its CGNAT in action here.
RtBrick’s multiservice edge routing software is transforming the networks of a wide range of operators, from Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telco, to regional ISPs such as WOBCOM. To learn more, visit rtbrick.com.
