Sparkle and Cyta Sign Agreement for the BlueMed Landing in Cyprus

With the submarine cable landing in Yeroskipos, the two companies strengthen their routes improving connectivity to Greece and other countries in the Mediterranean

Dubai/Rome/Nicosia, 4 February 2025

Sparkle, the first international service provider in Italy and among the top global operators, and Cyta, the leading provider of integrated electronic communications in Cyprus, have signed an agreement for the BlueMed cable landing in the Country.

BlueMed is Sparkle’s new cable connecting Italy with France, Greece and several countries bordering the Mediterranean. It is part of the Blue & Raman Submarine Cable Systems built in partnership with Google and other operators that stretch further in the Middle East up to Mumbai, India. With four fibre pairs and an initial design capacity of more than 25 Terabits per second (Tbps) per pair, BlueMed offers high-speed and high-performance connectivity along its route, supporting the growing needs and digital evolution of the connected countries.

Under the agreement, signed during the Capacity Middle East event in Dubai, Sparkle will create a branch of BlueMed to Cyta’s landing station in Yeroskipos, to provide the Cypriot operator with connectivity on its BlueMed submarine cable system between Cyprus, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries.

Once the cable landing is completed, BlueMed will enhance Cyta’s ability to meet the growing demand for advanced Internet services and digital content in Cyprus and provide high-speed connections and a superior data experience for its enterprise, institutional, and individual customers via diversified routes.

“We are very pleased with this agreement with Cyta, which confirms our shared commitment to strengthening connectivity in the Mediterranean”, said Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle. “With the upcoming landing in Cyprus, we are adding an important milestone in the BlueMed journey.

This partnership with Sparkle reinforces our long-standing relationship and amplifies our strategic role in the region as a connectivity hub in the East Med”, said George Metzakis, Chief Commercial Officer of Cyta. “The connection of Cyta to the Blue Med will further enhance the Cyprus Digital ecosystem.”

The BlueMed connection to Yeroskipos adds to the existing connection between Pentaskhinos and Chania (realized via the MedNautilus submarine cable systems), bringing diversification to the Cyprus-Greece route.
