More than 14,100 homes and businesses in 29 Maine communities can now benefit from Fidium’s multi-gig speed all-fiber network
AROOSTOOK & WASHINGTON COUNTY, Maine — Dec. 6, 2024 — Fidium is now available in parts of Aroostook County and the Greater East Grand Region of Maine, as its future-proof, symmetrical, multi-gig speed network has expanded to more than 14,100 homes and businesses in 29 communities. Fiber network expansion included Caribou, Danforth, Houlton, Madawaska, Princeton, Bancroft, Brookton Township, Cary, Codyville Plantation, Connor Township, Drew Plantation, Forest City, Forest Township, Glenwood Plantation, Haynesville, Hodgdon, Kossuth Township, Lambert Lake Township, Orient, Reed Plantation, Talmadge, Topsfield, Vanceboro, Waite, Weston, Woodland and Wytopitlock, as well as parts of Amity and Perham.
“Everyone is excited about the fiber expansion into our region,” said Dwayne Young, administrative assistant for the Town of Weston, Greater East Grand Economic Council Board member and chair of Broadband Taskforce. “This is a huge step forward for an area that likely wouldn’t have seen reliable, high-speed internet available to anyone that wants it, for years. The hard work by the 11 rural communities involved and the stepping up of Fidium to make it happen is proof that regardless of where in Maine you are, there is light at the end of the internet superhighway.”
“The City of Caribou is pleased that Fidium has made this investment in Caribou with its fiber network expansion”, said Penny Thompson, city manager for the City of Caribou. “By providing increased competition for broadband service, it is our hope that citizens can enjoy faster speeds at budget-friendly prices. Technology improvements in the region are long overdue as high-speed internet connection has become a basic utility like electricity. We look forward to the impact that this investment will have on improving the quality of life for our neighbors.”
“The Town of Madawaska is pleased to see fiber expanding into rural areas such as our community,” said David Daigle, town manager for the Town of Madawaska. “Especially in places where there was no connectivity before, or options for those who only had access to expensive connectivity, they now have a choice. Access to affordable and high-speed internet is necessary in today’s world. Connectivity and access allow homes, schools, and businesses to thrive in today’s economy.”
Fiber network expansion was funded through a significant investment from Fidium and a grant from Maine Connectivity Authority’s Connect the Ready program.
Recent studies confirm that fiber broadband drives economic growth, in particular for rural communities, increasing business growth by 213% and leading to 44% higher GDP. For individuals, fiber access resulted in self-employment growth of 10% and increased per capita income by 18%. Fiber also increases real estate values, as single-family homes with fiber access have a 4.9% higher value than those without. Fidium’s expansion of its all-fiber network brings these opportunities to the Greater East Grand Region and Aroostook County, as well as all the benefits that come with access to a fiber broadband connection.
“For rural communities, fiber transforms how we connect with one another, increasing access to educational, economic, healthcare and entertainment opportunities and options,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of Market Development for Fidium Fiber. “We are proud to help build the future in Aroostook County and the Greater East Grand Region, lighting up these communities and connecting them to the benefits of fiber.”
Communities in Greater East Grand Region were recently recognized as Gig Towns (communities with broad access to life-changing fiber internet) during the Sunrise County Economic Council’s Annual Summit. Communities awarded Gig Town status are: Bancroft, Brookton, Codyville Plantation, Danforth, Drew Plantation, Forest City, Forest Township, Glenwood Plantation, Haynesville, Kossuth Plantation, Lambert Lake Township, Orient, Reed Plantation, Talmadge, Topsfield, Vanceboro, Waite, Weston and Wytopitlock.
