Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Target Raised to “1.5°C Target” Approved by Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative

02/09/2024

ANRITSU CORPORATION (President Hirokazu Hamada) is pleased to announce that we updated our greenhouse gas emission reduction target in Scope 1+2[*1] from 2°C target[*2] to more aggressive 1.5°C target[*3], which has been approved by the SBT Initiative[*4]. We also reviewed the targets for Scope 3 (Category 1 and Category 11)[*5], which was approved as a Well-below 2°C target[*6].

Anritsu Group greenhouse gas reduction target will achieve the following:

  • Scope 1+2: Reduce by 42% compared with FY2021 by FY2030
  • Scope 3 (Category 1 and Category 11): Reduce by 27.5% compared with FY2019 by FY2030

In reviewing the targets, the boundary was changed to include Takasago Ltd. which joined the Anritsu Group in January 2022, Anritsu Infivis Inc. (U.S.A.) which is manufacturing locations of the PQA business, and others.

In December 2022, we joined the Race To Zero[*7] by making a Carbon Neutral Declaration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our business activities to virtually zero by 2050. Anritsu is promoting PGRE30[*8], an initiative to generate and consume renewable energy from solar power on site, as one of measures to reduce CO2 emissions under Scope 1+2. In 2023, a large-scale solar power generation system combining 1,100 kW solar power generation facility and 2,400 kWh energy storage facility was installed at the second factory in Tohoku Anritsu Co., Ltd. (Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture), the main plant for Anritsu products. We make effective use of power generated by storing surplus power and discharging it at night.

Anritsu has made addressing climate change a materiality in the environmental field. We will continue our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through energy-saving products, energy conservation, and the use of renewable energy.

Glossary

[*1] Scope 1+2
Scope 1 is direct CO2 emissions. Scope 2 is indirect CO2 emissions from energy sources.
[*2] 2°C target
The 2°C target aims to limit the increase in global temperature to 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
[*3] 1.5°C target
The 1.5°C target aims to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
[*4] SBT Initiative
International initiative formed by United Nations global compact between WWF (World Wildlife Fund), CDP (former Carbon Disclosure Project), and WRI (World Resources Institute). The aim of the SBT Initiative is to set scientifically well-grounded standards for businesses to hold the average increase in global temperature due to climate change to 2°C or less compared to temperatures before the Industrial Revolution.
[*5] Scope 3 (Category 1 and Category 11)
Scope 3 is indirect CO2 emissions from non-energy sources. Category 1 is purchased products and services. Category 11 is the use of sold products.
[*6] Well-below 2°C target
The Well-below 2°C target aims to limit the increase in global temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
[*7] Race To Zero
International campaign of the UNFCCC that calls on businesses, municipalities, investors, universities, and others around the world to commit to achieving virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to take immediate action to achieve that goal. In December 2022, Anritsu made a carbon neutral declaration and joined Race to Zero.
[*8] PGRE30
PGRE stands for Private Generation Renewable Energy. This PGRE 30 plan aims to increase the share of solar power generation in the renewable energy mix of companies in the Anritsu Group from 0.8% of total energy consumption in FY2018 to about 30% in FY2030.
