Level 3 to Work with National Broadcasters to Deliver the Royal Wedding to North American Viewers

Company to Work with Broadcasters to Transmit Live, High-Definition Video Feeds from the April 29 Wedding at Westminster Abbey Back to Viewers in the U.S. and Canada

BROOMFIELD, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced it has been selected by six national broadcasters in the U.S. and Canada to provide delivery of live, high-definition (HD) video feeds from the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in London to viewers in North America. Using Level 3 Vyvx Services, broadcasters including CNN and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation will deliver coverage leading up to and including the wedding on April 29. The wedding is expected to be one of the most-watched television events in history.

Prior to the wedding, Level 3 will work with broadcasters to set up remote connectivity and carry coverage related to the wedding from a number of locations in and around London, including Buckingham Palace and the wedding location, Westminster Abbey. On the day of the wedding, Level 3 will take live, HD feeds of the ceremony and, within seconds, send them via Level 3’s transatlantic network routes back to the U.S. and Canada to broadcasters’ headquarters. From there, broadcasters will send the video out to viewers.

“Two of Level 3’s major European gateway facilities are located in London which, along with our transatlantic network routes, allows us to quickly and efficiently take feeds from the wedding and deliver them back to the states,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Content and Media at Level 3. “And because Level 3 maintains control of its network, our seasoned event teams on the ground in London and in the U.S. can tightly manage the event delivery process from end-to-end, freeing broadcasters to focus on covering the big event, instead of the technical process of delivering it overseas.”

For more than 20 years, Level 3’s Vyvx broadcast services have carried some of the biggest events in sports and entertainment over one of the world’s largest video networks. Level 3’s extensive network footprint equips customers with end-to-end transmission capabilities to a number of major markets around the world. The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of broadcast, content delivery and IP solutions as well as an experienced international team that understands the complexities of delivering live events on a global scale. The company also has the unique ability to deliver solutions for both traditional and Internet broadcast, giving content owners additional options for delivery of their content from a single provider.
