EdgeCast, Kulabyte, and Sorenson Media Demonstrate Live Cloud Transcoding and Delivery

Solution allows single-source, live streaming to all major devices and formats

LAS VEGAS, NV – April 11, 2011— EdgeCast Networks, the world’s fastest, most reliable content delivery network (CDN), today announced it is demonstrating, at the 2011 NAB show in Las Vegas, a first-of-its-kind cloud transcoding and delivery solution engineered with Kulabyte and Sorenson Media.

The solution enables companies to ingest a single encoded, high bit-rate stream and serve it around the world in single and multiple bit-rates, as well as most major formats including native Flash (RTMP) and iPhone (HLS).

“This is a huge step forward for our corporate mission of empowering companies to quickly deliver any content to any connected device on the planet with a minimum of hassle,” said James Segil, president and co-founder of EdgeCast Networks. “The incredible power of the Kulabyte and Sorenson Media platforms, atop our fast worldwide network, are truly making that a reality.”

Kulabyte’s high-quality source encoders and cloud-based live video transcoding servers, combined with Sorenson Media’s real-time dashboard, workflow automation, video-on-demand transcoding stack, and overall cloud expertise create a seamless, cloud-based managed platform that can be deployed as a private or public cloud service. The EdgeCast CDN provides the high-performance ingest and delivery infrastructure needed for global reach and massive scale.

“The ability to deliver live transcoding across both legacy and emerging formats is the holy grail of the streaming space,” said Peter Forman, CEO of Kulabyte. “With this solution, customers no longer need to purchase stacks of encoding hardware and bandwidth to easily serve live content to every major platform.”

The easy-to-use solution also reduces bandwidth costs by allowing the source encoder to produce and upload a single stream for transcoding in the cloud rather than the legacy solution of uploading many different streams. It also reduces infrastructure costs by giving publishers access to an elastic computing environment that scales (and shrinks) along with their business needs.

“A one-stop automated cloud solution for live transcoding and delivery has huge potential for reducing publishers’ burdens and costs, and making it easy for every user to enjoy live content,” said Peter Csathy, president and CEO of Sorenson Media. “Now companies can be sure that regardless of a customer’s device, location, or connection speed, live streams will be delivered quickly, reliably, and intelligently.”

The solution is being demonstrated at Sorenson Media’s NAB booth #SU9502E3.

The three companies plan to offer the solution commercially by the end of 2Q2011.
