GCI strengthens mobile connectivity on Alaska’s road system

Keeping Alaskans connected on the highways between home, work and weekend adventures

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaskans are always on the go, especially during summer. In a place where a 2+ hour drive after work to fish for an evening—and making it home in time for work the next day—doesn’t raise any eyebrows, mobile connectivity matters. That’s why GCI has been strengthening its mobile network across Alaska, expanding LTE and 5G coverage, improving mobile data performance and adding partner coverage along key travel corridors statewide.

The upgrades provide customers with more unlimited talk, text and data coverage along the Parks, Glenn and Richardson highways, improving connectivity between Southcentral Alaska and destinations including Denali Park, Valdez and Fairbanks. South of Anchorage, customers will experience stronger mobile data performance along Turnagain Arm, as well as expanded 5G coverage in Portage, Cooper Landing and Hope.

GCI’s wireless site near Portage improves mobile service along Turnagain Arm.

“The need for connectivity doesn’t begin and end at home,” said GCI Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Troy Goldie. “Whether it’s work, family or a weekend adventure, Alaskans rely on mobile service throughout the journey. That’s why we continue to invest in our network and improve connectivity across the state.”

The upgrades are part of GCI’s ongoing work to make its mobile network stronger, smarter and more reliable. The improved technology gives teams a clearer view of network performance, helping them manage demand, respond more quickly and keep customers connected.

“Alaskans don’t think about the network until they need it—and that’s exactly why this work matters,” Goldie said. “Every investment we make is aimed at creating more direct, high-quality connections to our network. Whether someone is traveling across the state or reaching out in a critical moment, that translates into a stronger, more reliable experience for customers.”

Over nearly five decades, GCI has invested more than $5 billion to build, expand and continually improve the state’s largest telecommunications network—a long-term commitment that continues through the people, technology and infrastructure needed to keep Alaska connected today and ready for what comes next.
