LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, 1st June 2026 – FLAG, one of the world’s largest privately owned subsea cable operators, today announced the launch of a new Chennai-Singapore subsea route, delivering additional capacity and route diversity across a strategically important corridor connecting South and Southeast Asia.
The new route forms part of FLAG’s Vision 2030 strategy, which focuses on investing in strategically important fibre infrastructure to strengthen global coverage, diversity and long-term network resilience. Following the July 2025 launch FLAG’s new investment connecting Mumbai to Singapore, the Chennai-Singapore route extends connectivity on India’s east coast, providing a second, geographically distinct path between India and Singapore and strengthening overall network resilience.
Designed to support high-performance international connectivity, the Chennai-Singapore route provides an alternative, scalable path that improves resilience across FLAG’s Asian footprint. When paired with FLAG’s ECHO subsea cable system between Singapore and the US, it also adds new end-to-end routing options from India to the US, easing reliance on west-bound routes via the Middle East and Europe.
For customers, this route improves uptime, reduces latency and strengthens resiliency on a key regional corridor, supporting cloud connectivity, content delivery, enterprise networks and international expansion.
Paul Abfalter, Chief Strategy and Revenue Officer, FLAG, said: “Global connectivity is entering a more complex phase, where reliance on a small number of routes is no longer sustainable. Adding a second, geographically distinct path between India and Singapore is a deliberate step to strengthen long‑term network resilience and control. This route reinforces how FLAG is building a more flexible, multi‑path architecture that allows traffic to be managed, protected and rerouted as demand continues to scale across Asia and beyond.”
Nadya Melic, Vice President Product, FLAG, said: “India is an increasingly important market for FLAG, and investing in strategic connectivity hubs such as Chennai is central to how we strengthen long-term digital growth. By expanding connectivity through hubs like Chennai, we’re improving how the region connects into the wider global network, creating the foundations for more resilient and more equitable digital participation. This new route aligns directly with our Vision 2030 focus on deploying infrastructure in locations that improve diversity, resilience and access to global connectivity.”
India is a key pillar of FLAG’s long-term investment strategy, both as a connectivity hub and as a core operational base for the company. Alongside expanding its network infrastructure, FLAG maintains a significant workforce in India and has established ESG initiatives across the country focused on community engagement, skills development and expanding access to digital opportunity. These activities are embedded within FLAG’s wider sustainability framework and are detailed in the company’s Annual Sustainability Report.
