Stokholm’s first AI-ready Internet and Cloud Exchange will strengthen digital connectivity between North America and the Nordics, supporting enterprises, cloud providers, and network operators on both sides of the Atlantic.
New York (US) and Stockholm (Sweden) – 30 June 2026. DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, is strengthening digital connectivity between North America and Northern Europe by deploying Stokholm’s first AI-ready Internet and Cloud Exchange. The new deployment expands DE-CIX’s Nordic footprint while strengthening digital connectivity between North America and one of Europe’s most advanced digital regions, creating new opportunities for enterprises, cloud providers, content platforms, and network operators on both sides of the Atlantic to interconnect with lower latency, greater resilience, and direct access to growing AI ecosystems.
The announcement comes at a time of growing technological collaboration between the United States and Sweden. In May, the two countries signed a new Technology Prosperity Deal to strengthen cooperation across AI, connectivity, advanced manufacturing, quantum technologies, and other strategically important sectors, reflecting the increasing importance of resilient digital infrastructure to transatlantic innovation. Sweden has a GDP comparable to that of an American state, but companies based there support 280,000 American jobs while foreign investment in the US totaled $119 billion in 2024, ranking Sweden among the fastest growing sources of foreign direct investment in the US economy.
DE-CIX began its operations in the Nordics in 2023, with Internet Exchanges in Denmark (Esbjerg & Copenhagen), Norway (Kristiansand & Oslo), as well as Finland (Helsinki). Now the company is extending its service offering to the Swedish capital. DE-CIX Stockholm will be launched in September 2026 and is taking orders effective immediately.
The Stockholm exchange will be AI‑ready from day one, designed to support data‑intensive workloads, cloud‑based AI applications, and emerging real‑time use cases. Incorporating AI‑IX capabilities, it enables high‑performance, low‑latency interconnection between networks, clouds, and data‑driven platforms, while meeting growing requirements for resilience, scalability, and digital sovereignty. With local access to both Internet peering and cloud interconnection, customers will benefit from improved application performance, optimized hybrid and multi‑cloud architectures, and secure and direct connectivity to international networks and platforms.
The new IX will also be integrated into DE‑CIX’s existing Nordic and global interconnection ecosystems, providing optimized connectivity to key digital hubs across Europe and beyond. It will be operated by DE‑CIX International GmbH and deployed across multiple data center locations in the Stockholm metropolitan area.
“With more than 30 data centers, Stockholm is a huge hub for the Nordics, handling 55% of total Nordic Internet traffic. It is the largest colocation market in the region, supported by 125+ active network providers,” said Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE‑CIX. “By expanding to Stockholm with an AI‑ready Internet and Cloud Exchange, we are bringing our interconnection services closer to customers in Sweden and the wider Nordic region, while seamlessly integrating them into our global ecosystem. This enables enterprises, networks, and cloud providers to build and scale AI‑driven applications with confidence.”
The expansion builds on DE‑CIX’s continued investment in the Nordic region, where the company has steadily upgraded network capacity and interconnection services to support cloud adoption, data‑intensive workloads, and AI‑driven innovation. As a key digital hub connecting continental Europe, the UK, and global data flows, Stockholm complements existing DE‑CIX locations in the Nordics and reinforces the company’s role in the region.
DE‑CIX operates a carrier‑ and data center‑neutral interconnection ecosystem spanning five continents and 60+ locations globally, connecting more than 4000 networks worldwide. The expansion to Stockholm reflects DE‑CIX’s long‑term strategy to extend its footprint with future‑ready, AI‑capable Internet Exchanges, combining local proximity with global reach.
