Winter Storm Fern

Jan. 21, 2026, 2:42 p.m. CT

We’re storm-ready.
Our teams are tracking Winter Storm Fern and prepared to respond to any network impacts. Staying connected is critical, especially during severe weather.

Here’s how we’re preparing:

  • Boosting network capacity for higher call volume
  • Testing backup batteries at cell sites
  • Staging portable and maintaining fixed generators
  • Positioning emergency response equipment for rapid deployment

The FirstNet Response Operations Group™ (ROG)led by former first responders, stands ready to support emergency communications and deploy backup solutions as needed.

Be prepared before the storm hits. Here are quick tips for our customers:

  • Stay informed: Use mobile devices for weather updates if home phones go out
  • Charge ahead and save battery: Use power-save mode, turn off Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, delete unused apps, or switch to Airplane Mode
  • Update emergency contacts: Store key numbers in your phone (police, fire, hospital, family)
  • Limit non-emergency calls: High call volumes can cause delays; hang up and try again if needed
  • Try texting: Texts often go through faster than calls during network congestion
  • Use satellite if needed: iPhone 14+ (iOS 16.1/18): Emergency services & messages via satellite / Google Pixel 9: Text emergency services via satellite. For more information on availability and how to use, visit here for iPhone and here for Pixel.

We’ll keep monitoring the situation and remain focused on keeping customers and first responders connected.
