ATL Free WiFi Officially Launches Free Public Internet Network on Broad Street in Downtown Atlanta

Atlanta, GA – ATL Free WiFi, a community powered mesh network dedicated to expanding digital equity across the city, has officially launched its first free public WiFi corridor on Broad Street in Downtown Atlanta. The network went live in December and now provides open, reliable internet access to students, residents, workers, and visitors at no cost.

Broad Street, one of Atlanta’s most active pedestrian corridors, was selected as the launch point due to its unique role as a community hub. The street serves thousands of Georgia State University students, office workers, Downtown residents, and visitors each day. With restaurants, cafes, small businesses, public art, and a weekly Thursday vendor market, the corridor has evolved into a natural gathering place in the heart of the city.

“Reliable internet access should not depend on income or circumstance,” said Dylan, founder of ATL Free WiFi. “Broad Street is a true community space, and the people who use it every day deserve dependable, open connectivity. Launching the first network here was the natural choice.”

A Community Powered Network Now Live

ATL Free WiFi uses a resilient mesh network model, supported by small interconnected nodes rather than a single centralized point. Local businesses, student housing buildings, restaurants, and property owners on Broad Street host supernodes that broadcast coverage across the corridor. Additional nodes extend the network block by block.

The service is completely free to the public. When users connect, they see a brief splash page with a hyper local advertisement that supports the network’s sustainability without creating barriers to access.

The network is already delivering measurable benefits:

  • Students can complete coursework and access campus resources between classes
    • Workers and entrepreneurs have dependable connection while on the move
    • Visitors can navigate Downtown easily with stable mobile connectivity
    • Small businesses benefit from increased digital engagement and mobile payments
    • Residents without high speed home internet gain a consistent public option
    • Nonprofits serving unhoused neighbors have a reliable point of contact
    • Public safety benefits from stable communication access in a high foot traffic area

Why Broad Street Was Chosen

Broad Street offers the ideal conditions for community driven connectivity:

  • High daily pedestrian volumes
    • A dense Georgia State University student population
    • Numerous restaurants, local shops, and small businesses
    • Weekly markets and regular public activity
    • Buildings suitable for outdoor wireless infrastructure
    • A walkable layout that naturally supports shared public use

By launching on Broad Street, ATL Free WiFi directly meets the needs of the people who use the corridor most while strengthening the fabric of Downtown.

A Model Built to Expand Across Atlanta

The Broad Street launch marks the beginning of a larger citywide vision. ATL Free WiFi is designed to scale through neighborhood partnerships, community organizations, NPUs, nonprofits, universities, and local businesses.

Future expansion efforts may include:

  • Public parks and recreation spaces
    • Student corridors surrounding major campuses
    • Affordable housing communities
    • Neighborhood commercial districts
    • Pedestrian routes and trail connectors

Each new zone reinforces the long term goal of a more connected Atlanta where free public WiFi is accessible to everyone.

Built by Local Technical Expertise

ATL Free WiFi is led by Dylan, an Atlanta resident with extensive experience in networking, hardware deployment, and telecom systems. His hands on engineering background ensured that the network was built for real world durability and long term performance.

“This is a neighborhood project with a citywide mission,” Dylan said. “It is powered by local residents, local businesses, and a shared belief that internet access is a modern necessity. The launch of ATL Free WiFi on Broad Street is just the beginning.”
