Analyst Take

At its flagship event, Navigate 25, Alianza unveiled the Intelligent Communications Fabric, a new architecture designed to help communications service providers (CSPs) increase revenue from their networks. This system unifies communications infrastructure and orchestration, enabling providers to deliver high-value experiences across both fixed and mobile networks. The Intelligent Communications Fabric essentially modernizes the global telephone network (PSTN) by infusing it with modern, AI-powered services. This upgrade can help service providers unlock new revenue opportunities by creating a more intelligent and efficient communications ecosystem.

The new platform was developed through close collaboration with customers to address a significant problem: the network monetization gap. The Intelligent Communications Fabric is a three-layer system that modernizes how providers manage their networks. By simplifying network functions and unifying the control of media, data, and services, it helps providers transform their operations and drive new revenue growth.

Key to sustaining the portfolio development innovations and capabilities of the Intelligent Communications Fabric is that Alianza brings a proven track record of scale to fulfilling CSP transformation, supporting over 1,000 CSPs in 81 countries, including 19 of the top 20 global operators. With more than 400 patents, Alianza has established itself as an enduring supplier in delivering carrier-grade technology. The company’s global footprint provides a most solid foundation for service providers looking to modernize their networks.

Alianza Directly Addresses the Network Monetization Gap

The telecommunications industry is facing a significant problem. Despite investing over $3.6 trillion in network infrastructure over the last decade, it has seen virtually no revenue growth. While broadband speeds have increased by 1,000%, the financial value created by this improvement has largely benefited other companies (i.e., OTTs), not the service providers who built the networks. The Intelligent Communications Fabric offers a solution that can provide a clear path for providers to break this cycle and reclaim their role in the AI-powered communications era.

From my viewpoint, service providers have been sidelined, watching others profit from the very networks they built. The new Intelligent Communications Fabric can change that by transforming providers into strategic leaders in the AI economy, not just modernizing their infrastructure. With flexible deployment and end-to-end orchestration, this platform can give providers the tools they need to lead customers into the future of intelligent communications.

Why Alianza Intelligent Communications Fabric: How a Three-Layer Architecture Can Drive Innovation and Monetization

The new Intelligent Communications Fabric is built on a three-layer architecture designed to create a modern and integrated technology stack for telecommunications companies. This system provides a clear path for service providers to innovate and increase revenue.

The Infrastructure Layer offers a full range of deployment options. This includes traditional telecom-grade network functions managed directly by the service provider, as well as new hosted services (Alianza Fusion), and a fully managed cloud-native platform (Alianza One). This suite of flexible options allows providers to modernize their core communications networks on their own terms, making the transition faster and simpler than ever before.

The Orchestration Layer acts as the central intelligence, bridging older legacy systems with modern capabilities. It features an intelligent control plane that automates workflows using an open API framework. This layer’s key functions include automating provisioning from end to end, ensuring strong security, and providing comprehensive visibility into network operations.

Finally, the Experience Layer unlocks new, high-value communication services infused with AI. This is where providers can offer modern solutions like unified communications, contact center services, and advanced voice applications for both businesses and consumers. By enabling these services, the Experience Layer helps providers tap into new monetization opportunities within the growing AI economy.

This three-layer system positions service providers at the very center of the convergence of AI and telecommunications. By unifying what were once fragmented systems and enabling seamless AI integration, the platform transforms every call into an opportunity for intelligent, revenue-generating services. It not only prepares providers for the future but also empowers them to lead it.

Viewed from a portfolio lens, Alianza Infrastructure Solutions consists of three fundamental product offerings (Core, Fusion, One) that provide communications network solutions with flexible deployment and operating models.

Alianza Core delivers physical, virtual and containerized network functions from Alianza, which are deployed and operated by the service provider. Alianza Fusion is the core-based communications systems, hosted and managed by Alianza. Alianza One is the full-stack cloud communications platform, delivered by Alianza.

I find that key to the competitive benefits and advantages of the new solution is the Orchestration Layer of the Intelligent Communications Fabric, which is designed to bridge legacy systems with modern experiences by leveraging a suite of key capabilities. This layer simplifies complexity and enables a new level of intelligent communication.

At its core, the platform provides robust Media and Signaling Interworking. It bridges traditional media protocols (RTP) and signaling protocols (SIP) with modern APIs. This is a game-changer for developers, as it allows them to easily integrate new AI applications directly into real-time call flows and manage call control without needing to understand complex, outdated systems.

The layer also unifies Data and Provisioning. It seamlessly transfers critical data elements—like billing records, user behavior, and call quality metrics – between the infrastructure and experience layers. This provides the essential data needed for robust reporting and analytics. Furthermore, it offers a set of unified APIs and automation tools for the entire provisioning process, including quoting, ordering, and billing for external platforms like Microsoft Teams and RingCentral.

Finally, the Orchestration Layer ensures both Observability and Security. It provides end-to-end visibility into performance, faults, and usage through real-time monitoring and analysis. This is all supported by enterprise-grade security that includes strong authentication, encryption, and key management, ensuring a trusted and secure connection between all applications and networks.

The Orchestration Layer underpins the ability of the Experience Layer and Infrastructure Layer to deliver improved customer and partner experiences as well as positive business outcomes.

Emerging Use Cases: The Rise of the Hyper-Verticalization Era

I find that hyper-verticalization can be understood as an advanced business strategy where a company moves beyond serving a broad industry and instead focuses exclusively on a highly specific, niche segment of that market. Unlike traditional verticalization, which might target a single industry like healthcare, hyper-verticalization hones in on a very precise problem for a particular type of customer, providing specialized vertical solutions.

For example, Alianza is deftly partnering with Dental Intelligence, a Utah-based company that provides analytics and workflow automation software for dental practices. By combining Dental Intelligence with Alianza communications portfolio capabilities, service providers can play an integral role in delivering a unified solution that specifically fulfills both the workflow and communications needs of dental practices.

The real-time anti-fraud use case is especially compelling. Alianza shared that it is estimated that American consumers were scammed out of $50 billion in the 2023-24 span. To help prevent such scams, Alianza is backing anti-fraud capabilities that require both the calling and receiving parties to consent to the secure monitoring of their call. This mechanism can compel scammers to abort their call since they would not want their conversations recorded. If both parties consent and a scam is still perpetrated then there is a recording fallback to assist law enforcement and remediation efforts.

From my perspective, Alianza should consider branding its anti-fraud solutions, The Beekeeper, in keeping with the Bee/Beehive theme of Navigate 25 and aligning with the successful The Beekeeper film franchise that aims squarely at the societal blight of scams, especially ones perpetrated over communications networks (potential co-marketing campaigns backed by the telecommunications industry). This can demonstrate that Alianza and the telecommunications industry needs to and will play an instrumental role in countering this criminal activity alongside raising awareness and mide share across all societies.

By narrowing its focus to a single, hyper-specific use case, Alianza can work with CSP partners to develop a deep, specialized understanding of its customers’ unique pain points, enabling well-defined portfolio developments to build products and services that are far more tailored, effective, and defensible than what a generalist competitor could offer. This approach can enable Alianza and its allies to become solution leaders within critical niches, building a reputation for unparalleled expertise and earning higher degrees of customer loyalty.

Looking Ahead

Overall I believe Alianza’s full-stack Intelligent Communications Fabric is precisely the solution needed to ensure CSPs can bridge the growing gap between the legacy limitations of phone networks and modern customer demands. To boost the competitiveness of its new Intelligent Communications Fabric over the next 12 months, Alianza should focus on three strategic areas: enhancing the product, strengthening its market message, and leveraging partnerships.

First, Alianza must refine and enhance its product portfolio to prove the platform is more than just a rebranding. AI-infused is a good start, and Alianza needs to follow through by delivering tangible, high-value AI applications such as real-time call summarization or intelligent call routing that directly translate into new, monetizable services. The company should also prioritize expanding its open API framework and developer tools to encourage third-party innovation on the platform. Critically, Alianza must further spotlight advancing its Metaswitch integration and provide a clear, seamless migration path for legacy customers to build trust and prove the viability of the new platform.

Moreover, Alianza needs a clear and consistent strategy to make its Intelligent Communications Fabric category stick in the market. This involves continually creating compelling case studies that quantify how the solution helps service providers close the monetization gap by showcasing real revenue increases and cost savings. The company should focus its marketing on forward-thinking service providers and differentiate their flexible, no vendor lock-in approach from competitors who push a singular cloud agenda. This will appeal to a wider range of customers and highlight the platform’s unique value.

Finally, Alianza should cement its position as a market pacesetter through partnerships and thought leadership. They should continue to invest in the Navigate event to establish its role as a premier must attend telco event. To further validate the company’s AI capabilities, Alianza should forge deeper technical partnerships with AI model and cloud providers. Publishing thought leadership assets and research that define the monetization gap and position the Intelligent Communications Fabric as the definitive solution will also be crucial for shaping the industry conversation and giving their sales teams a powerful new tool.
