Fiber to the What? Gateway Fiber Becomes First Internet Provider to Install Service in an Ice Fishing House

Maple Grove, MN — In the middle of Minnesota’s chilly winter, Gateway Fiber became the first fiber internet provider to deploy service to an ice fishing house when it ran a fiber line across the ice to two portable shelters in the middle of frozen Fish Lake in Maple Grove, MN. The February 20 “Fiber to the Fish House” event drew a crowd of bundled-up guests out to the sub-freezing temperatures to see this technological first.

“With this fiber connection running across the ice, we had the same high-speed online access you can enjoy with our service at home,” said John Meyer, Chief Customer Officer at Gateway Fiber. “We even ran some online gaming sessions and hosted three podcasts right in the middle of frozen Fish Lake. Clearly, we’re different from your cable company. We’re faster, more reliable, and more fun.”

The day started with the lighting of the fiber internet connection as installation technicians connected the fiber line and powered up the Calix Wi-Fi box so attendees could log onto their mobile devices and experience ultra-high-speed internet in action for themselves on Gateway Fiber’s 2 Gig network.

“What Gateway Fiber has done here is amazing,” said one local attendee. “We’ve been waiting for an alternative to cable internet for a long time. This event is a great way to showcase the new service and have a little fun at the same time.”

Guests were encouraged to run a speed test to see some of the fastest connection speeds they had ever experienced.

Local guitarist Brendan Bonin entertained attendees while they enjoyed pizza from Red’s Savoy and hot beverages from MISFIT Coffee served in commemorative “Fiber to the Fish House” logoed travel mugs.

One lucky attendee won tickets to the February 25 Minnesota Wild game vs. the Detroit Red Wings, while another guest landed a weekend fishing expedition with Matt Reinertson Fishing, who provided the two fish houses for the gathering.

Three podcasts hosted by media powerhouse Pulltab SportsVikes Verified, Gopher Puck Life (GPL), and Crunch Wears No Pants – took over one of the fish houses and broadcast live from inside to close out the event.

While Gateway Fiber will not be offering permanent fiber internet service to fish houses any time soon, the event highlighted how fiber is unaffected by the weather, no matter how hot or cold – or frozen.
