Today Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) giffgaff, a subsidiary of Telefónica UK, announce the successful completion of transitioning Ericsson’s Mediation from an on-premises deployment to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The move will improve giffgaff’s ability to collect data from different parts of the network, process it to a unified and standardized format, and use the subsequent insights generated to enhance network performance, service experience, and billing accuracy, leading to improved operational efficiency and service delivery.

In today’s rapidly evolving technology landscape, MVNO’s are seeking solutions that enable scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness. giffgaff has adopted a strategy focused on migrating existing applications and deploying new ones on AWS to reduce total cost of ownership and increase agility. This deployment highlights Ericsson’s ability to deliver cloud-native telecom applications, optimized for deployment on AWS.

Steve McDonald, Chief Operating & Technology Officer at giffgaff says: “All of our decision-making is data driven at giffgaff, meaning we need the most intuitive, reliable cloud-based systems in place to support our ambitions for great customer service. We’re pleased to have worked in partnership with Ericsson to successfully migrate the Ericsson Mediation node into the cloud to ensure the reliability of the data and its delivery, further ensuring a seamless service that we provide to our over 4 million customers every day.”

Ericsson Mediation utilizes modern software design principles with independent components (microservices) that allow for efficient development and automated deployment processes. This flexible architecture enables MVNO’s like giffgaff to quickly roll out new mediation capabilities and scale them based on changing needs and user demands. By deploying Ericsson Mediation on AWS, giffgaff gains several key advantages:

  • Proven infrastructure: Leveraging AWS’s robust, scalable and secure global infrastructure, verified for Ericsson applications including Mediation
  • Flexibility and scalability: Ability to efficiently deploy new applications and scale based on demand
  • Cost efficiency: Optimizing costs through AWS’s pay-as-you-go consumption model
  • Security: Maintaining compliance with data protection regulations through AWS’s built-in security

John Griffin, Country Manager for Ireland, Ericsson, said: “giffgaff’s successful deployment of Ericsson Mediation on AWS ensures it has the foundations in place to power growth, resilience and flexibility as it develops and bolsters its service capabilities for the future. The move also further validates that Ericsson’s telecom applications like Mediation are cloud-native and ready for deployment on leading public cloud platforms. We will continue working closely with AWS to deliver innovative, future-proof solutions that enable our customers’ cloud transformation strategies.”

The successful migration of Ericsson Mediation to AWS lays the groundwork for further collaboration around deploying additional IT workloads on public cloud platforms. Ericsson remains committed to offering flexible deployment models that support communication service providers’ cloud transformation strategies, enabling them to modernize their deployments aligning with changing business needs.
