Orders accelerate fiber deployment and bolster the American workforce
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — March 20, 2025 — Brightspeed, the nation’s third-largest fiber broadband builder focused on empowering more homes with ultrafast, reliable internet, announced its support of today’s action by the FCC’s Wireline Competition Bureau under the leadership of FCC Chairman Carr. The orders recognize that copper networks are increasingly obsolete and costly to maintain, and that there are many choices for voice communications. These orders will allow telecommunications service providers to modernize networks using fiber or wireless technology — improving service for customers and helping increase fiber broadband deployment.
“We are already making a multi-billion-dollar investment in building our fiber networks across our 20-state footprint and every dollar spent on the aging copper networks is a dollar we can’t spend on deploying fiber,” said Brightspeed CEO Tom Maguire. “Reduced copper maintenance costs will allow us to accelerate the deployment of our fiber, reaching more homes and businesses more quickly and more efficiently, with the reliable connectivity needed for families and businesses to work, learn, play and thrive.”
Access to fast, reliable and affordable internet, voice, and Wi-Fi will strengthen the American workforce by creating new jobs and giving more Americans access to upskilling and learning opportunities. Bridging the digital divide will give individuals and families access to education, jobs and telehealth and provide businesses with ecommerce and growth opportunities.
“Since we launched Brightspeed, we have been making significant investments in the rural and suburban communities we serve to ensure they have the state-of-the-art high-speed internet and voice services they need but have historically lacked,” added Maguire. “Now, customers served by copper lines will be able to receive the latest technology that provides reliable, superior service.”
