In the project, China Mobile Hebei also explored an innovative new business model, upgrading standard data plans to high-value, customized services, which has garnered strong market recognition for the high-quality 5G connectivity. This pioneering initiative in 5G-enabled smart tourism has effectively highlighted the market potential of the tailored, high-value services.

Context and challenges of digital transformation

In recent years, the rapid advancement of 5G technology has created new opportunities for the sustainable and high-quality development of traditional tourism. Qinhuangdao Yutian Town has attracted a large influx of tourists by leveraging the popularity of the influencer economy. However, issues such as network congestion and livestream latency during peak hours have hindered its growth. Moreover, with tourists demanding more immersive experiences and interactive livestreams, the destination faces an urgent need to improve service quality using advanced communication technologies.

Innovative 5G solutions

To address these challenges, Ericsson and China Mobile Hebei harnessed the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G network to design a suite of innovative communication solutions tailored to the town’s needs. These solutions specifically target key hotspot areas, including accommodations, performance venues, amusement zones, and entrance points. Ericsson offers customizable hardware for efficient, differentiated services in high-capacity scenarios like live streaming. This approach transforms service providers from mere pipeline operators selling traffic to entities offering tailored services.

  1. Livestream optimization: Uses frequency-division-based preferred camping and prioritizes site resource scheduling strategies to allocate wireless bandwidth resources efficiently.
  2. Traffic optimization: Introduces a value-oriented “traffic suppression estimation method” using clustering analysis and segmented traffic suppression models, optimizing network resource allocation.

In 2024, the project achieved zero latency issues and received no complaints about livestream services. The network service garnered widespread acclaim from both the operator and livestream influencers. The operator assumes the cost for exclusive services.

Additionally, Traffic in Yutian Town grew from 40.7T to 132.2T, an increase of 91.5T and a 225% year-over-year growth rate. The return on investment in traffic optimization is achieved in a shorter time.

Innovation in Business Models and a Win-Win for All Stakeholders

The project fostered innovation in China Mobile’s business models by shifting from traditional network services to exclusive, high-value product offerings, leading to significant business breakthroughs and a win-win outcome for the destination, operators, and visitors.

Benefits:

  • Livestream guarantee generated revenues from capture card sales and services.
  • Traffic optimization unlocked network potential for sustained growth in business revenue.
  • Significant ROI growth.

Li Xiaozhuang, Deputy General Manager of China Mobile Qinhuangdao, says: “The exclusive service upgrade for Yutian Town successfully addressed the network bottleneck in its operations, unlocking business potential while providing a fresh new approach to enhance the destination’s performance and drive innovation in mobile service models.”

Looking Ahead

Wu Qiangjun, General Manager of Ericsson Hebei Office, says: “In collaboration with China Mobile and other partners, Ericsson will continue to accelerate the digital transformation and intelligent upgrading of the tourism industry with 5G-driven smart tourism solutions across more tourist destinations, harnessing 5G technology to empower a broad range of industries.”
