Far EasTone and Ericsson successfully achieved differentiated connectivity with 5G Advanced capabilities at Taipei Dome

Ericsson and Far EasTone Telecommunications have successfully conducted a pioneering trial of differentiated connectivity cluster using 5G Advanced network capabilities and Network APIs during a major concert with 40,000 attendees at the Taipei Dome on the New Year eve, demonstrating how curated Quality of Service (QoS) can enhance mobile experiences in high-density environments. By moving beyond traditional best-effort connectivity, this breakthrough opens new monetization opportunities for communication service providers (CSPs). This milestone marks a new chapter for Taiwan’s mobile services and will be featured at Mobile World Congress 2025, highlighting the commercial potential of differentiated connectivity with network APIs and 5G Advanced software.

Addressing the demand for enhanced connectivity

Most mobile services today rely on best-effort connectivity, where network performance cannot be guaranteed per individual users in highly congested network areas such as critical events. However, Ericsson ConsumerLab’s recent global 5G user study found that 35 percent of surveyed 5G smartphone users would be willing to pay for differentiated connectivity to support essential applications. This trial validates the potential of on-demand network performance enhancement to meet evolving consumer expectations.

Experience highlights: On-demand connectivity enhancement

During the concert, attendees had the opportunity to enhance their connectivity by purchasing an on-demand performance enhancement package, allowing them to capture and share key moments with significantly improved network performance. This specific case has been achieved through Network APIs including differentiated connectivity, device location and SIM swap. This upgrade resulted in uplink speeds increasing by 130 percent and downlink speeds by 198 percent compared to best-effort connectivity.

Chee Ching, President of Far EasTone, states: “Ericsson and Far EasTone have been long-standing partners, committed to enhancing mobile user experiences and driving 5G innovation. Over the years, we have showcased breakthroughs at MWC, including the 5G Smart Patrol Car, AI-powered energy-efficient networks, and the 5G Smart Ambulance. This year, we are taking our collaboration even further with a pioneering consumer-oriented differentiated connectivity trial. With Ericsson’s leading 5G-Advanced technology, we can meet user demands for low latency, high efficiency, security, and flexibility—especially in high-demand scenarios like large events—while unlocking premium experiences for our customers.”

Cutting-edge 5G Advanced technologies powering the cluster

This achievement was made possible by Ericsson 5G Advanced software Automated Radio Resource Partitioning (ARRP), part of the Real-time AI-powered Automation subscription that dynamically optimizes network slicing to enhance efficiency and reduce manual configuration. Furthermore, User Equipment Route Selection Policy (URSP) ensured application-specific traffic was directed via end-to-end network slices, maintaining seamless and consistent performance level meeting users’ needs in high-density environments. Additionally, Far EasTone’s AI platform is integrated, as well as Ericsson’s Cloud Core Exposure Server (CCES) to enable Network APIs including differentiated connectivity, device location and SIM swap, allowing real-time analysis of user behavior and location data to suggest personalized connectivity packages while ensuring a secure transaction process.

David Chou, President of Ericsson Taiwan, says: “According to the research from Ericsson ConsumerLab, 46 percent of Taiwanese 5G users expect differentiated connectivity for an enhanced experience beyond standard network performance. We remain committed to helping our customers deploy high-performing networks, unleash the full potential of 5G, and deliver tailored connectivity that meets evolving user needs.”

Drazen Jarnjak, Head of Networks, Ericsson Market Area North East Asia, says: “We are very excited to enable Ericsson 5G Advanced in Far EasTone Network, delivering high-performing differentiated connectivity service in Taipei Dome. 5G Advanced technology will ensure consistent and superior user experience at guaranteed quality and will facilitate new possibilities for Far EasTone to best utilize its 5G network.”

Paving the way for new business models

To be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2025, this successful cluster highlights the commercial and technological impact of 5G Advanced, paving the way for intelligent, secure, and flexible network experiences that can redefine mobile service offerings. By showcasing the potential of differentiated connectivity to enhance user experiences and create new monetization models for CSPs, Ericsson and Far EasTone are shaping the future of next-generation mobile networks.
