- Chunghwa Telecom leveraged Ericsson Site Digital Twin (ESDT) and Generative AI to predict congestion, enhance network capacity by approximately 14 percent, and maintain smooth 5G downlink speeds during Taiwan’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
- This deployment, with AI-powered digital twin, will be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2025, demonstrating how digital twin leverages predictive automation to enhance network resilience and efficiency during large-scale public events.

As mobile data consumption surges to record highs during major public events, communication service providers (CSPs) are under immense pressure to keep networks running seamlessly. On New Year’s Eve in Taiwan, data traffic was four times higher than the previous week, with usage around Taipei 101—the focal point of the city’s celebrations—spiking to five times the Christmas Eve level.
In response to this challenge, Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) have introduced AI-powered digital twin technology to revolutionize network management. The solution, which combines Ericsson Site Digital Twin (ESDT) with Ericsson Network Intelligence (ENI) and Generative AI, allowed Chunghwa Telecom to maintain fast and reliable connectivity despite extreme demand.
Unlike traditional network management approaches that rely heavily on manual intervention and reactive problem-solving, this AI-driven solution enables near real-time radio site performance and predictive maintenance for the site lifecycle management. Generative AI analyzes vast data sets, forecasts congestion points, and automatically optimizes network resources to prevent service disruptions before they occur. This proactive fault prevention and near-real-time monitoring of critical KPIs are especially valuable during high-traffic events like New Year’s Eve celebrations.
With ESDT gathering site information, ENI collecting performance, fault, and configuration management data, and Ericsson Live RAN Insights (ELRI) visualizing key performance indicators in near real-time, the data-driven approach to preventing network faults in crowded areas is now complete. Generative AI will adjust KPI thresholds based on the number of subscribers to avoid congestion, thereby saving the operational team time in critical, time-sensitive environments.
“Major events like New Year’s Eve push our networks to the limit, and ensuring uninterrupted service for our customers is our top priority,” said Chung-Yung Chia, President of Network Technology Group at Chunghwa Telecom. “By integrating Ericsson’s Digital Twin and AI capabilities, we’ve been able to manage extreme traffic loads with remarkable efficiency. This not only enhances network performance but also strengthens customer trust in our ability to deliver seamless connectivity when it matters most.”
The results were immediate and significant. Network strain was reduced through more efficient traffic distribution, increasing network capacity by nearly 14 percent. This deployment ensured smooth streaming, file sharing, and video calls for thousands of users gathered at Taipei 101. By automating troubleshooting and minimizing the need for on-site interventions, Chunghwa Telecom also reduced operational costs, further improving its bottom line.
“AI and digital twin technology are redefining how networks are managed, making them more resilient, agile, and intelligent,” said David Chou, President of Ericsson Taiwan. “Our partnership with Chunghwa Telecom demonstrates how operators can leverage AI-driven insights to ensure exceptional network performance even under the most extreme conditions. This is just the beginning of a smarter, more proactive approach to telecom operations.”
The AI and digital twin solution will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2025, where Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson will present how these technologies support real-time network optimization and enhance the management of large-scale events.
