Arelion Completes 1,069-Kilometer IP Transmission with Cisco 800G ZR+ Coherent Optics in Network Field Trial

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Arelion today announced it has successfully completed a field trial on its long-haul route between Stockholm, Sweden, and Hamburg, Germany, using Cisco 800G ZR+ Coherent pluggable optical modules in Cisco 8000 series routers powered by Cisco Silicon One. The trial demonstrated IP transmission at 800 Gbps over 1,069 kilometers, providing higher cost savings than currently deployed technologies. Cisco 800G ZR+ pluggables reduce Arelion CAPEX costs by 66 percent and OPEX costs by 95 percent while allowing Arelion to fully utilize the port capacity of Cisco’s next-generation routers.

Cisco’s OpenROADM-compliant 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optical modules, with +1 dBm transmit power, improve the energy efficiency of global networks by consolidating excessive hardware and simplifying overall architecture. These benefits empower internet carriers by providing higher cost savings and increased performance while lowering the number of interfaces to maintain. This field trial demonstrates how Arelion can significantly reduce power consumption and maximize bandwidth, enabling higher data speeds for wholesale and enterprise customers.

“This latest milestone showcases the power of Cisco’s OpenROADM-compliant 800G ZR+ pluggables and Cisco 8000 series routers in transforming global networks to enhance performance and interoperability amid mounting customer demands,” said Bill Gartner, SVP and General Manager, Optical Systems and Optics, Cisco. “Arelion’s continued dedication to cutting-edge optical investment reflects our mission to support bandwidth-intensive solutions through energy-efficient infrastructure as enterprises increasingly integrate cloud and AI/ML applications.”

“This network field trial reinforces our long-term investment in Routed Optical Networking to improve the cost efficiency and scalability of our #1 ranked global internet backbone,” said Dariusz Solowiej, VP of Networks and Operations, Arelion. “Our achievement lays the groundwork for optical networking innovations that support AI/ML applications as they become essential to our customers’ business success, helping to spur economic growth through high-capacity connectivity.”

With this network field trial, Arelion provides customers in North America with enhanced access to Arelion’s #1 ranked global Internet backbone, as well as Arelion’s portfolio of reliable, fully diverse connectivity services, including scalable IP Transit, Wavelengths, Dedicated Internet Access (DIA), Cloud Connect, Global 40G Ethernet Virtual Circuit (VC) and DDoS Mitigation services for service providers, content providers and enterprises.
