AMS-IX and Milan Internet Exchange take a new step in driving connectivity across Europe with Cross-IX

Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Milan, Italy, 10 December 2024 – AMS-IX and MIX, Milan Internet Exchange, have today signed a Strategic Partnership to offer the new Cross-IX service between both exchanges, expanding peering networks across Europe via just one connection. The partnership was announced during the Salotto 2024 event where over 1.300 people from the community were present. In the first step towards this game-changing Cross-IX connectivity, Milan internet Exchange customers will be able to connect directly to AMS-IX in Amsterdam, opening up access to over 850 additional networks exchanging over 14 Tbps of traffic, via just one connection.

MIX is the second European Internet Exchange offering customers to expand their connectivity network with the AMS-IX ecosystem. In May 2024, Netnod in Sweden also took the step towards a Cross-IX connection with AMS-IX. As Cross-IX grows, customers at the participating Internet Exchanges will have access to hundreds of new unique networks. The goal of Cross-IX is to provide a simple solution to reach the major connectivity hubs in Europe without risk, delay or the need for CAPEX in hardware and colocations.

Transport costs are included in Cross-IX pricing. All connections can be managed via one single contract and can be provisioned on an existing (or new) port. As of today, Cross-IX service from Milan Internet Exchange is live to AMS-IX in Amsterdam, benefiting customers from Milan IX who desire to easily expand their connectivity networks with just one connection to MIX. In the next phase, customers from AMS-IX will gain similar benefits from a direct connection to Milan Internet Exchange, where 420+ ASNs exchange over 2.8Tbps of traffic.

Alessandro Talotta, Executive President & Chairman MIX, comments: “AMS-IX has always been a strategic partner for MIX. Milan and Amsterdam are two key areas for data development, and with this collaboration, MIX aims to strengthen its leadership by working alongside one of the most virtuous players in the Internet world. The agreement allows both organizations to expand their customer portfolios, providing the opportunity to seamlessly connect Milan and Amsterdam. A concrete example is the support offered to small local operators who need to virtualize their presence across borders. This agreement will further enrich MIX’s service portfolio.”

Peter van Burgel, CEO of AMS-IX says: “It is exciting to see another innovative connectivity partner like MIX offering their clients an expanded connectivity ecosystem through our Cross-IX service. With Cross-IX, customers of MIX and customers and members of AMS-IX can easily extend their ecosystem of networks without risk, delay, hardware requirements or additional administrative burdens. As we continue to build out our Cross-IX service, customers will be able to access to hundreds of connected networks across Europe with just one connection.”
