Sparkle Wins the “Project of the Year” Prize at the Global Connectivity Awards

The intercontinental submarine cable system “BlueMed” awarded at the most prestigious competition in the global telecommunications sector

Sparkle, the first international service provider in Italy and among the top global operators, received the “Project of The Year – Subsea, Terrestrial, Satellite and/or Wireless” prize at the Global Connectivity Awards (GCAs) ceremony, held last night in London within the Capacity Europe 2024 event to celebrate the achievements in wholesale telecoms in the past year. At their 20th edition, GCAs are the telecoms’ largest celebration of innovation, vision and excellence across the industry worldwide.

With the “Project of the Year” the jury – made up of an independent, expert panel of more than twenty judges from across the telecoms sector – awarded Sparkle for its BlueMed submarine cable system, the new intercontinental infrastructure stretching from Italy to Jordan. BlueMed was acknowledged as “the most ingenious, visionary and demonstrably impactful digital infrastructure project of the year”.

With four fibre pairs and an initial design capacity of more than 25 Terabits per second (Tbps) per pair, BlueMed represents a significant leap forward in global connectivity, standing out from traditional submarine cables in terms of diversification, scalability and latency between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Commenting on this achievement, Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, said: “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award that recognizes the innovative value of our flagship project BlueMed and Sparkle’s ability to design and implement forward-looking infrastructures. We are also pleased to underline how this award sets Italian technology, creativity and inventive at the centre of the global TLC ecosystem”.

BlueMed connects Italy with France, Greece and several countries bordering the Mediterranean. It is part of the Blue & Raman Submarine Cable Systems – built in partnership with Google and other operators that stretch further in the Middle East up to Mumbai in India – that is among the first projects being implemented on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) set up at the G20 summit in September 2023.
