New York, US, 2 October 2024. DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange (IX) operator, today announces its expansion into Brazil, with Internet Exchanges (IXs) deployed in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The deployments mark the company’s first two locations in South America, and the fifth continent where DE-CIX now has a presence. Both IXs will be directly interconnected with DE-CIX New York in the US, strengthening connectivity between what are currently the Western Hemisphere’s two largest economies.
The news marks the company’s continued commitment to growing a global IX ecosystem with diverse routes that provide reliable, low-latency connectivity with enhanced resilience opportunities. Together, DE-CIX IXs in New York, Dallas, Chicago, Richmond, and Phoenix, as well as the dedicated Cloud Exchange in Seattle, constitute the largest neutral interconnection ecosystem in North America.
The two new Brazilian IXs will be the first in the country to offer a full set of enterprise-grade interconnection services, including DE-CIX’s Cloud Exchange capabilities, Cloud ROUTER, and the Microsoft Azure Peering Service (MAPS), in addition to peering services. Both IXs will be interconnected, allowing customers to access peering and cloud connectivity solutions remotely in-country. Furthermore, as well as being directly interconnected with DE-CIX New York, they will also interconnect with DE-CIX’s IXs in Southern Europe, employing both south-to-north and south-to-south Atlantic connectivity corridors and enabling connected customers to reach thousands of local, regional, and international networks that together form the largest interconnection ecosystem in the world.
“We are delighted to be entering Brazil, a massive market with 165 million Internet users and more than ten thousand networks. DE-CIX is proud to be bringing our complete portfolio of high-performance interconnection services to São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro to support the continued digital transformation of the Brazilian economy, one of the strongest economies in the world,” says Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX. “Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprises alike will be able to leverage local, regional, and international interconnection opportunities, especially with the USA and Southern Europe – where we already have many Brazilian networks at our exchanges.”
The newly established entity, DE-CIX Brazil, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the DE-CIX Group, and the company will start its operations with IXs in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. DE-CIX Brazil will be integrated into the operator’s global IX ecosystem through connections to DE-CIX New York, DE-CIX Lisbon, and DE-CIX Madrid – using diverse routes across the Atlantic – from day one. The IXs are planned to be hosted in multiple data centers in each location, following DE-CIX’s distributed, data center and carrier neutral approach. With the ready-for-service date expected in Q2 2025, the DE-CIX IX in São Paulo will kick off in the Elea Data Centers SP01, the Equinix SP4, and the Ascenty SP4 facilities. In Rio de Janeiro, DE-CIX will start its Brazilian endeavor in the Elea Data Centers facility RJ01 and the Equinix RJ2 data center.
With the Brazilian market entry, DE-CIX enters an already strong interconnection market and sees itself as well-placed to offer solutions to meet the accelerating demand for redundancy and resiliency. “Brazil is the only country of such a market volume anywhere in the world to still have so few IXs of a significant size serving its population. A complementary offering on the market provides opportunities for redundancy and greater choice for network operators, as well as attracting new players to enter the market, benefitting the entire digital ecosystem. Beyond this, DE-CIX is the first IX operator to offer a full range of enterprise-grade interconnection and cloud connectivity services. This is another exciting step in the evolution of Brazil, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Ivanov closes.
