Data4 announces 500 million euro investment to develop a new Data Center campus in Milan of 100 MW

The new data center campus of the French group, which at the beginning of the year announced a 1 billion euro investment plan to strengthen its presence in Italy, will be located in Vittuone, in the Greater Milan area,

As part of this investment, the company has allocated 500 million euros for the purchase of more than 77,000 square meters of land and the development of the new MIL02 site – by 2027 the first infrastructure will be in place

Paris, April 2nd 2024Data4, leading French operator and investor in the data centre market, announces today the purchase of 77,000 square meters of land for the development of MIL02, the new data center campus to be built in Vittuone, near Milan.

The €500 million investment is part of the Group’s expansion project, which aims to strengthen its presence and competitiveness in the Italian market by redeveloping former industrial areas to foster the country’s digitization. In fact, the French Group aims to offer its customers access to a European network of ultra-connected infrastructure thanks to its 6 data center campuses among the most powerful in Europe, located in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Poland and Luxembourg.

The digitization of the country goes through the construction of physical infrastructure, data centers, which hold the digital platform containing the sensitive data of citizens, banks, institutions and businesses. An activity that impacts the territory on many levels, and whose demand is constantly growing.

Construction of the first Data Center at the new MIL02 campus is scheduled to be completed in early 2027.  The latter alone will have a capacity of 15 MW and, following its completion, will enable Data4 to create synergies between its sites through direct connectivity between the two campuses.
Once all the buildings are completed, the Vittuone site will have 4 Data Centers, with a total power of 100 MW. Upon completion of infrastructure construction, Data4 will have 18 Data Centers in Italy spread over 28 hectares of land and a total power of around 300MW.

Davide Suppia, Country Director, Vice President Sales of Data4 Italy and IDA Board Member commented:
For the development of our digital infrastructures in Italy, Data4 plans to invest 1 billion euros between 2023 and 2029, aimed at the implementation of additional Data Centers and innovative projects that aim to reduce the environmental impact related to our activities. Thanks to this strategic investment, Data4 is confirmed among the Italian and European Data Center leaders. With the purchase of the land in Vittuone we pursue the goal of being increasingly present on the Italian territory, responding to the growing demand for Data Centers, driven by the acceleration of national digitalization. In a context in which the demand for digital services is constantly growing, investing in infrastructure such as Data Centers becomes strategic to support digital transformation and actively contribute to the economic development of the country, as well as of businesses and local communities.

Greg McCulloch, Chief Development Officer Data4 Group added, “This acquisition is part of our ambition to become the leading pan-European data center operator. It also strengthens our presence in northern Italy.” Following the transformation of Italtel’s former industrial site in Cornaredo into a data center campus, the acquisition of the MIL02 Vittuone site underscores our commitment to the region and our desire to continue to invest and work with the local ecosystem.”

Vittuone MIL02 campus: sustainability at the heart of construction and operational management

In order to achieve more responsible digital development, Data4 works diligently on sustainable projects and solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of data centers on the environment.
The Vittuone campus, in fact, will be built on 50-60% brownfield and in line with this vision the group will use low carbon concrete for the construction of the new infrastructure, which allows a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional concrete, as it has already done for the Cornaredo campus, built on a former Italtel area, now regenerated.

Regarding energy impact, in addition to using electricity from 100 percent renewable energy sources, the Vittuone campus will be implementing the latest and most innovative solutions such as the Energy Efficiency Hub, which, thanks to artificial intelligence, analyzes the best solutions to make data center cooling systems more efficient and sustainable by calculating and analyzing the amount of CO2 emitted during the life cycle (LCA) of the infrastructure on campus.

Thanks to a total bank financing of 2.2 BILLION euros, obtained last October through a debt financing, the Data4 group operates six of Europe’s most powerful data center campuses.About Data4
