Africa IP GALA 2024: First Arab-Africa IPv6 & Net5.5G Innovation Contest Launched

[Marrakesh, Morocco, May 30, 2024] During GITEX AFRICA 2024, Huawei, together with Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization (AICTO) and IPv6 Forum, held the Africa IP GALA 2024 summit. Themed “Bring Net5.5G into Reality, Inspire New Growth,” the summit aimed to promote the upgrade of the Net5.5G industry and usher in the Net5.5G era in Africa.

At the summit, the Arab IPv6 Council officially kicked off the first Arab-Africa IPv6 & Net5.5G Innovation Contest. Hosted by the Arab IPv6 Council and co-organized by AICTO, IPv6 Forum, and Huawei, the contest aims to expedite the development of information and communications technologies in Arab and African regions, drive the evolution of network infrastructure to Net5.5G, and promote IPv6 deployment in key industries. It also aims to accelerate carriers’ network innovation and stimulate growth potential. The contest provides a technical exchange platform for creative organizations and individuals to demonstrate IP network innovation achievements, spark innovation, and accelerate regional digitalization. Carriers, enterprises, universities, research institutes, and individuals in the Arab and African regions canĀ register for the contest here. Entries will be evaluated and awards presented in October 2024.

This summit brought together more than 100 guests from African telecommunications regulators, industry organizations, carriers, and think tanks. Through the professional exchange platform built at the summit, participants gave their take on the current development of the global IP industry, IP technology evolution and innovation, and successful business practices of African carriers.

Addressing attendees, Leon Wang, President of Huawei’s Data Communication Product Line, said that digital technologies are pushing industries to new heights. The expansion of Africa’s digital economy requires powerful IP networks as the foundation of ICT infrastructure. Carriers and industry organizations have reached a consensus that a next-generation Net5.5G IP network needs to be constructed to support 10GE connections for home broadband, mobile broadband, enterprise private line, and enterprise campus services. Huawei hopes to work with operators and industry organizations to promote Net5.5G from concept research to application deployment and inspire operators’ new growth.

Latif Ladid, Chairman of the IPv6 Forum, mentioned that Net5.5G-related protocol standards are mature, and that regional governments and carriers should take this opportunity to accelerate the deployment of Net5.5G technologies.

Alem Hailemariam Yirgaw, Deputy Chief Network Infrastructure Officer of Ethio Telecom, noted that Ethio Telecom is building a Net5.5G-oriented IP target network. With key capabilities such as 400GE, SRv6, network slicing, and Network Digital Map, this will help Ethio Telecom better develop 5G and cloud services and support the implementation of theĀ Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy.

Feng Su, Vice President of Huawei Network Marketing & Solution Sales Dept., launched Net5.5G converged IP network solution. Huawei provides the “0” downtime network powered by YUNSHAN NOS + programmable NP chipset; Differentiated experience is the key to win in Giga Era, Huawei ISE(Intelligent Service Engine) solution inspires new business growth.

Closing the event, Chris Meng President, Huawei Northern Africa ICT Marketing & Solution Sales, said that Net5.5G will help carriers build more intelligent transport networks that feature higher bandwidth and better user experience, helping countries develop their digital economy. He also said that Huawei will continue to deepen cooperation with African carriers to better unleash the potential of Africa’s digital economy.
