200,000 homes across the Balearic Islands to be connected with 10-gigabit speed

10 April 2024 – 200,000 homes across the Balearic Islands will soon have access to ultra-fast fiber connectivity thanks to a new project between Slovenia’s Kontron and Fibwi worth €5 million. 100,000 homes across Mallorca will be among the first to be connected.

Fibwi has now become the first network operator in the Balearic Islands to offer XGS-PON technology and services for its customers, with symmetrical speeds of up to 10 Gbps. This project marks an important milestone of high-speed connectivity for the region. The strategic collaboration guarantees the best internet experience not only for residents of large cities, but also for those in less populated rural areas.

Pepe Seger, Business Development for Spain and LatAm at Slovenia’s Kontron commented: “We are delighted to see the positive impact of our solution for Fibwi. This achievement reaffirms our commitment in offering European solutions that make a difference in the current technological and geopolitical landscape.”

Slovenia’s Kontron ensured seamless integration of its products, leveraged interoperable and best-of-breed technologies and avoided vendor lock-in thanks to open standards and open-source software. To support Fibwi’s sustainability strategy, the Iskratel Lumia T14 was deployed within the network. All Iskratel Lumia products ensure low Total Cost of Ownership, support current and future FTTH technologies, and have low energy consumption. Its flagship product and the world’s fastest OLT, the Iskratel Lumia T6, was a finalist at the FTTH Conference awards last month.

During the migration process, Fibwi and Slovenia’s Kontron successfully integrated the new 10-gigabit fibre-access solution into the existing network infrastructure, causing no service interruption during the transition. The ensured service continuity reaffirms the Quality of Service that Fibwi delivers to its customers.

Francisco Alcalde, the founder and CEO of Fibwi, expressed his pride: “We are truly excited to be the first in the Balearic Islands to offer internet connectivity with speeds of 10 Gbps. With this milestone, Fibwi consolidates its position as the speed leader providing unparalleled internet experience in urban areas and inland villages alike.”

The 10-gigabit data rate promises to transform the experience of users and families and is ideal for those that require ultra-fast connectivity for work, study or entertainment. It significantly improves web browsing, streaming and gaming, and is an excellent choice for households with multiple internet users.
