New PoP will expand access to high-speed IP transit in South America
SANTIAGO, CHILE – February 27, 2024 – Hurricane Electric, the world’s largest IPv6-native Internet backbone announced today that Hurricane Electric has deployed a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Ascenty SCL2 in Santiago, Chile. The new PoP is located at 2100 Calle Guacolda, Santiago 8710067, Chile.
The Ascenty SCL2 data center is just 20.5 kilometers (12.7 miles) from Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport and is easily accessible from major highways. This facility serves customers throughout Chile and is one of Ascenty’s three data centers in this capital city. The network is connected to Brazilian submarine cables and all international cable landing stations, providing customers a global reach. This secure, 22,000 square meter carrier-neutral data center has 1,500 racks, 16MW site power capacity, N-1 redundant power supply, with three power lines serving each data hall, and N-2 redundant chilled water plant and isolated technical corridors for equipment maintenance.
This PoP is Hurricane Electric’s first location in Chile and eighth location in South America. It will provide organizations in the region with improved fault tolerance, load balancing, and congestion management in the delivery of next-generation IP connectivity services.
Santiago is home to a strong manufacturing sector, which accounts for 50% of the country’s GDP. It is also the technology hub of Chile, with a strong and supportive start-up ecosystem. Chile is a prominent economic force, with stable, strong trade relations and a growing tech sector that is driving digital innovation in South America.
“We are thrilled to deploy our first PoP in Chile to provide local businesses and ISPs with reliable global IP transit,” said Mike Leber, President, Hurricane Electric. “This PoP reaffirms our commitment to providing high-quality, low latency connectivity options in South America, while helping to strengthen the region’s technical infrastructure.”
Customers of Ascenty SCL2 and in and around Santiago now have a variety of new connectivity options and access to Hurricane Electric’s extensive IPv4 and IPv6 network through 100GE (100 Gigabit Ethernet), 10GE (10 Gigabit Ethernet) and GigE (1 Gigabit Ethernet) ports. Additionally, customers at the facility are able to exchange IP traffic with Hurricane Electric’s vast global network, which offers over 30,000 BGP sessions with over 10,000 different networks via 310 major exchange points and thousands of customer and private peering ports.
