Enterprises in Chicago and Atlanta to Experience the Near-Premises Advantage
AUSTIN and PHILADELPHIA – Vapor IO and Comcast are teaming up on a pilot to enable third-party edge service providers to host data and applications in local Comcast markets. The companies will kick off initial projects in Chicago and Atlanta with the goal of demonstrating product readiness and identifying opportunities for scaling nationwide.
By enabling edge service providers to bring their data and applications closer to end-users, Vapor IO and Comcast will help to enable faster response times, lower latency, favorable economics, and better overall user experiences. The pilot will combine Vapor IO’s industry-leading Kinetic Grid platform with Comcast’s robust network infrastructure.
“Our combined solution unlocks the economics of edge computing,” said Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO. “Integrating Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid with Comcast’s nationwide 10G network gives third parties the ability to run edge applications cost-effectively, at scale and with better performance.”
The Near-Premises Edge
Vapor IO and Comcast will allow enterprises to quickly adopt near-premises services to rapidly accelerate innovation cycles and deploy new technologies without the cost and frustrations commonly associated with performing the same tasks on their premises.
“Our extensive network facilities are located in close proximity to businesses across the country and that presents an exciting opportunity to work with Vapor IO, specifically in Chicago and Atlanta, to enable new edge services that take advantage of the low latency and high bandwidth capabilities of our network,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Comcast.
The XaaS Economy
The economics of shared infrastructure, when combined with the ability to serve hundreds or thousands of customers from a single platform, has the potential to revolutionize enterprise business models that have traditionally required large capital investments in on-premises infrastructure.
Vapor IO and Comcast expect to offer the following services available to customers in pilot markets that take advantage of this XaaS (anything as a service) approach:
- Computer vision as a service.
- Video security as a service.
- Private 5G as a service.
- Edge cloud as a service.
- Industry-specific applications as a service, including smart city, smart retail and smart factory.
Timing
The companies are targeting Q3 2023 for the initial pilots in Chicago and Atlanta.
