Geneva, SWITZERLAND — March 15, 2023 — STACK Infrastructure (“STACK”), the digital infrastructure partner to the world’s most innovative companies and a leading global developer and operator of data centers, has agreed to provide supplemental power capacity to the Swiss energy reserve, supporting the Federal Council’s ordinance.
Known as the “Winter Reserve”, the ordinance seeks to prepare the Confederation for a possible energy shortage during winter months and outlines measures aimed at preventing power outages, including holding hydropower, power plant, and generator reserves. STACK has committed to provide capacity via its existing emergency generators which can be requested by Swissgrid to increase the security of power supply in the short term.
Owners of backup power generators are encouraged to contribute to the reserve to ensure the continued availability of electricity throughout the country. Participation is voluntary and spans the period of February 15 to April 30, during which time the state can activate the reserve if an electricity shortage is imminent.
“STACK has the capacity not only to support our clients’ mission-critical workloads, but also to provide additional energy capacity to the grid, so we are pleased to contribute to the Winter Reserve,” explained John Eland, CEO, STACK EMEA. “STACK is committed to serving the local communities in which we operate. We are confident that Switzerland is resilient to any potential energy challenges, and we look forward to continuing to support the Confederation and Swiss citizens any way we can.”
STACK makes community commitments across the EMEA region. Most notable are its heat reuse programs in Geneva and Oslo, which provide surplus heat to local businesses and homes, contributing to a sustainable, circular digital economy. Heat reuse is now standard in STACK’s new data center designs, including that of its planned facility in Beringen (Schaffhausen).
