GSA: Number of commercially available 5G devices passes the 1000 milestone

Globally, there are now over 1,334 announced 5G devices

LONDON, UK – 27TH APRIL 2022 – The GSA today confirmed the number of commercially available 5G devices surpasses 1,000 for the first time, representing 74.9% of all announced 5G devices. This is a rise of 16.6% in total commercial 5G devices over the previous quarter.

The latest “5G-Ecosystem Summary April 2022” report reveals that the number of announced 5G devices rose by 3.2% in March 2022 to reach 1,334 devices. The report also finds that mobile phones now account for over 50% of all announced devices, with the figure standing at 677. However, while phones dominate, GSA has now identified 24 form factors of 5G devices announced by 191 manufacturers.

The new report also shares that by end of March 2022, the GSA had identified:

  • 1,334 announced devices, including regional variants but excluding operator-branded devices that are essentially rebadged versions of other phones. Of these, at least 1,000 are understood to be commercially available:
    • 677 phones (up 34 from February 2022), at least 636 of which are now commercially available (up 34 in a month)
    • 213 fixed wireless access customer-premises equipment (CPE) devices for indoor and outdoor uses, at least 119 of which are now commercially available
    • 174 modules
    • 85 industrial or enterprise routers, gateways or modems
    • 55 battery-operated hot spots
    • 33 tablets
    •  28 laptops or notebooks
    • 11 in-vehicle routers, modems or hot spots
    • 8 USB terminals, dongles or modems
    • 52 other devices, including drones, head-mounted displays, robots, TVs, cameras, femtocells/small cells, repeaters, vehicle on-board units, a snap-on dongle/adapter, a switch, a vending machine and an encoder
    • 722 announced devices with declared support for standalone 5G in sub-6 GHz bands, 537 of which are commercially available.

A free executive summary of the report can be downloaded here: https://gsacom.com/paper/5g-ecosystem-summary-april-2022/  (registration required). The full report, available to all GSA Members and Associates subscribing to the GAMBoD service, includes additional data including the growth in 5G FWA CPE and 5G phones, the spectrum support of 5G devices and a full list of the commercially available 5G devices.

“The first quarter of the year was off to a flying start for the 5G ecosystem with the industry breaking through the symbolic barrier of 1000 commercially available devices, and there many more to come,” commented Joe Barrett, President of the GSA “Indeed, based on manufacturers’ previous statements and recent rates of device release, we might expect the number of commercial devices to approach the 1,200 mark by the end of the second quarter of 2022. The 5G ecosystem still has an important room for growth and we are looking forward to seeing it grow whether it is through the number of devices, the number of networks or the number of end-users.”
