TIM Brasil and Huawei Sign MoU to Transform Curitiba into the Country’s First ‘5G City’

Curitiba, the capital of Paraná, will be the first city to start a project to develop a series of solutions for 5G testing, with a focus on smart cities and improving peoples’ lives
Mar 04, 2022

[Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 4, 2022] During Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022, TIM Brasil and Huawei announced that they have signed a collaboration agreement (MoU) to develop “5G City”, with the aim to realize a smart city through 5G networks, predict the evolution of technology, monitor networks, and improve user experience. The first pilot city will be the capital of Paraná, Curitiba. The agreement is for two years and can be extended. The first test is expected to be finalized by December 2023.

The collaboration between the companies will further develop 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. TIM and Huawei are working together to build the world’s largest Massive MIMO (M-MIMO) network. M-MIMO is a technology that extends the signal transmission range using a large number of antennas and helps deliver data with higher quality. For the 5G City project, the M-MIMO network can maximize the 5G transmission speed with ultra-low latency. This is one of the unique features of 5G networks.

As the leader in 4G coverage and a pioneer in 5G projects in Brazil, TIM continues to provide the best network and deliver the optimal user experience. Leonardo Capdeville, CTIO of TIM Brasil, said: “This project is one of the steps for TIM to expand 5G services and become one of the major operators in the world. TIM is working with Huawei to further develop 5G in Brazil to launch the 5G City project. Curitiba is most innovative city in Brazil and South America, we are excited to work on such a project in Curitiba that can greatly affect economic development for the whole country.”

The 5G City project involves implementing wide 5G coverage for the city. In addition to monitoring the network, this project aims to improve user experience by developing devices and solutions to provide high-quality services but with lower energy consumption and cost.

Cao Ming, Vice President of Huawei Wireless Product Line said, “We are glad to have this opportunity to work with TIM to develop a high quality 5G network in Curitiba. Our aim is to help TIM lead the industry in the development of 5G networks. Huawei and TIM are both pursuing innovation and success. I believe this will be another successful project in Brazilian telecommunications.”
