Frankfurt Internet Exchange DE-CIX Breaks Record: 11 terabits per second data throughput

Frankfurt am Main, 2 February, 2022. DE-CIX (German Commercial Internet Exchange) in Frankfurt has set a new record for data throughput at peak times. On February 1, at around 8 pm, a new peak traffic record was set at Europe’s leading Internet Exchange, reaching 11 terabits per second. Since the start of the Corona pandemic in February 2020, data throughput at peak times at DE-CIX in Frankfurt has increased by over 30 percent. DE-CIX Frankfurt is one of the largest Internet Exchanges in the world, with 11 terabits per second data throughput at peak times and nearly 1100 connected customers. In 2021, DE-CIX’s global infrastructure1 handled over 38 exabytes of data throughput; roughly equivalent to the storage capacity of more than 300 million smartphones, each with 128 GB memory.

The DE-CIX Internet Exchange in New York also achieved a new peak traffic record at the end of January, exceeding the 1-terabit mark. Other DE-CIX sites in Hamburg, Munich, Istanbul, Madrid, and Dubai have also achieved records in the last few weeks.

“Not least the current wave of Omicron infections due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been impacting data throughput: People are moving their activities into the home environment, streaming movies and even sporting events, downloading new games and software updates. All of this continues to drive up data traffic and the use of digital services. We at DE-CIX expect further records in the coming weeks and months – not only at our German sites, but also worldwide,” said Dr. Thomas King, CTO at DE-CIX. “In addition, we see that digitalization has received a boost in demand for data capacity at all levels over the last two years, with and through Covid-19. In particular, large enterprises and stock corporations are adapting their interconnection strategies and specifically seeking consultations and data exchange at and via Internet Exchanges such as DE-CIX.”

DE-CIX connects nearly 2,500 carriers, Internet service providers (ISPs), content providers and corporate networks from more than 100 countries at its 32 Internet Exchanges in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, and offers peering, cloud, and interconnection services. Together, the DE-CIX Internet Exchanges form the world’s largest neutral interconnection ecosystem, with a connected customer capacity of more than 90 terabits.

Background information: What is a terabit per second? What does data throughput of 11 terabits per second mean?

  • A terabit per second, Tbit/s or Tbps, is a dimension for the transmission speed of data.
  • 11 terabits per second corresponds to the simultaneous transmission of approximately 2.42 million videos in HD quality, or a data volume of approximately 2.4 billion written A4 pages (a stack more than 240 kilometers high).
  • 1 Terabit per second is 10³ Gbit/s, 106 Mbit/s, 109 kbit/s or 1012 bit/s, i.e. around 1,000,000,000,000 bits per second.
  • The next lower data rates are measured in gigabits per second (Gbit/s) and megabits per second (Mbit/s).
