Lumen Technologies supports Wyoming Hyperscale’s vision for “sustainable” datacenters

Wyoming entrepreneur works to “reinvent the datacenter” as environmentally sustainable

DENVER, Aug. 24, 2021 – Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN), a leader in enterprise technology for the 4th Industrial Revolution, announced today it will provide adaptive networking and security solutions for sustainable datacenter developer Wyoming Hyperscale White Box, which plans to launch its first development site in Aspen, WY, early next year.

Wyoming Hyperscale seeks to build sustainably operated data centers around the world, providing greater access to data, with less waste and greater energy efficiency. They have turned to Lumen to support this vision by supplying accessible, clean, and reliable technology solutions.

“Lumen’s commitment and unique abilities to use technologies to support environmental sustainability aligns with Wyoming Hyperscale’s pursuit to change industry norms for datacenter developers,” said Ed Morche, Lumen president of North American Enterprise and Public Sector. “We are proud to provide Wyoming Hyperscale the right solutions to help them deliver reliable, energy-conscious results.”

A Focus on Sustainability

Wyoming Hyperscale seeks to “reinvent the datacenter” by using a combination of proven cutting-edge approaches — liquid cooling efficiency and closed loop external cooling. Liquid cooling uses a bio-based dielectric fluid for heat removal that increases a datacenter’s cooling power efficiency by 95%. In addition, this method of liquid cooling, when paired with Wyoming Hyperscale’s proprietary solution, consumes no water.

Wyoming Hyperscale’s ability to use zero water in its liquid cooling infrastructure makes its datacenters among the first to apply this new, energy efficient method. Unlike other traditional cooling towers used by datacenters, Wyoming Hyperscale’s unique model also includes an adjacent cooling solution that removes heat from the liquid cooling system and transfers it with no water usage, fans, or refrigerants.

“One of the most important aspects of the project is the focus on its implementation of cutting-edge technology to make it as efficient as possible, with the smallest footprint environmentally,” said Wyoming Hyperscale operating partner and 6th-generation rancher Brady Thornock.

Trenton Thornock, founder of Wyoming Hyperscale, envisioned the proposed datacenter as an opportunity for land stewardship in addition to supporting environmental sustainability. This will be the first phase of a master planned 120MW hyperscale development site for Wyoming Hyperscale, estimated to be finished in April, 2022.

Lumen Solutions for Wyoming Hyperscale

Lumen’s adaptive networking solutions will provide Wyoming Hyperscale with the digital infrastructure to support high-bandwidth connectivity needs and to deliver data on-demand to Wyoming Hyperscale customers.

Lumen will also provide dedicated denial-of-service attack solutions (DDoS) to support Wyoming Hyperscale’s ongoing efforts to proactively prevent cyberattacks from rendering data inaccessible. Lumen’s DDoS solutions capitalize on powerful protection technology to guard users from multi-vector and mixed-application-layer attacks, minimizing downtime through mitigation services.
