Conversations with Corey: Girls Who Code

I believe education is a year-round effort, and I’m always interested to hear about the work we’re doing with Girls Who Code, an organization building a pipeline of future technologists, serving 450,000 girls globally, half of whom are Black, Hispanic/Latino or low-income. Girls Who Code recently wrapped up their annual Summer Immersion Program, a two-week computer science program where young girls get an inside look into the tech field through virtual hosts like AT&T.

As we recognize and reflect on Women’s Equality Day tomorrow, I thought it was fitting to connect with Dr. Tarika Barrett, the CEO of Girls Who Code for this month’s Conversations with Corey. Dr. Barrett has been with the nonprofit since 2016, and she recently stepped into the CEO role. In our conversation, we discussed the importance of role models for girls and young women studying STEM and entering the workforce, the impact the pandemic has had on learning and how AT&T and Girls Who Code are working to bridge the homework gap, and how representation is critical for the future of technology.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to chat with Dr. Barret and to shine a light on the progress made to-date, and the work still needed to be done to help young women across the globe transition into their career and become future leaders.

Watch the video for our inspiring conversation below.
