1 July 2021

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Lightspeed Broadband today announced they will roll out a 10G symmetric fiber broadband to 1 million homes and businesses in the East of England by the end of 2025. Lightspeed will connect the first 100,000 customers by the end of 2022, starting in 10 market towns in South Lincolnshire and West Norfolk, including Spalding, Stamford, Boston and King’s Lynn, and expanding through Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

The agreement will see Nokia provide Lightspeed with its XGS-PON kit for both customer homes and the operator’s points of presence, and aggregation switching and IP edge solutions. It also includes Nokia’s whole-home Wi-Fi 6 Beacons and Nokia’s Altiplano management platform.

Steve Haines, CEO, Lightspeed Broadband, said: “We are delighted to be a key account for Nokia, which we feel reflects our strategic relationship and growth potential. Nokia has demonstrated the flexibility and agility we need to support our ambitious deployment plans.”

Jeremy Steventon-Barnes, CTO, Lightspeed Broadband, said: “Following a rigorous selection process we chose Nokia for their industry-leading and future-proofed solution which means we can offer 10Gb/s services with best-in-class whole-home Wi-Fi 6 today, and upgrade to even faster speeds in the future.”

Phil Siveter, CEO UK & Ireland at Nokia, said: “High speed broadband is crucial to the UK’s economic growth, and we’re delighted to be supporting Lightspeed’s entire deployment, from the customer’s Wi-Fi router to the Broadband Network Gateways that connect Lightspeed to the global Internet.”

Notes to editors:

Nokia’s XGS-PON solution

Nokia ISAM FX is a high-capacity access node for massive scale fiber rollouts. Usually located in telecom central office, it connects thousands of users via optical fiber, aggregates their broadband traffic and sends it deeper in the network. The fiber access node supports multiple fiber technologies to deliver a wide range of services with the best fit technology.

Nokia’s Altiplano solution

The Altiplano Access Controller offers a complete suite of network management as well as SDN control functions to visualize, optimize, and enhance broadband networks. Altiplano automates network lifecycle management activities and provides operators a single pane of glass to manage the entire access network domain. Its open modular architecture with open APIs allows to integrate easily with OSS/BSS, IT and cloud platforms.”

Nokia WiFi Beacon

Nokia WiFi Beacons support the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard and use algorithms to detect and mitigate potential issues in the home in real-time. The Beacons always select the strongest Wi-Fi channel, and ensure that client devices are connected in the best possible way to maximize the end-users’ broadband experience. The Wi-Fi network can be seamlessly extended by adding Beacons to avoid any dead spots in the house. A mobile app brings ease of installation and management to the end-user. The Nokia WiFi Cloud Controller gives helpdesk agents a real-time holistic view on the in-home network to solve any customer query quickly and efficiently.
