Indoor 5G Gigabit Networks Verified in Tianjin’s National Convention and Exhibition Center

[Tianjin, China, June 15, 2021] China Mobile Tianjin verified Huawei’s 5G indoor distributed Massive MIMO in the National Convention and Exhibition Center in Tianjin, marking a big step forward for this telecom carrier and its efforts to bring wall-to-wall Gigabit connections to national convention and exhibition centers. China Mobile Tianjin aims to become the first service provider in China to offer seamless 5G Gigabit services in mega venues. The field tests showed that the average download speed reached 1.26 Gbps and the user-perceived speed exceeded 1 Gbps in 95% of the venue. This level of performance will ensure seamless experience for visitors at all times.

Located in the Jinnan district of Tianjin, the National Convention and Exhibition Center is the third national-level exhibition venue after the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou and the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. It will play a vital role in optimizing the configuration of national convention and exhibition centers, transferring non-capital functions to the cities nearby Beijing, and building important platforms in China and around the world for international exhibitions.

Convention and exhibition centers often have a high density of users, requiring mobile networks of tremendous capacity. Conventional solutions to boost this capacity rely heavily on adding base stations to indoor networks and increasing the spectrum multiplexing rate — a key approach to maximize spectral efficiency. However the boost this provides is often compromised by interference arising between channels operating on the same frequencies.

5G indoor distributed Massive MIMO offers an ideal solution to this persistent industry challenge. By leveraging multi-antenna joint reception and transmission, this new solution translates the interference on the boundary of cells into desired signals that carry digestible data. As such, the interference is mitigated to improve user experience and the rate loss caused by interference is reduced while boosting the overall capacity. In verification tests of the solution, the user-perceived downlink rate increased by 50% and the downlink peak throughput reached 1.45 Gbps. The seamless Gigabit experience provides a strong foundation for exploring diversified mobile broadband services in the complex.

China Mobile Tianjin always looks to provide users with premium experience through innovative solutions, and will continue to collaborate with Huawei to innovate towards competitive experience-oriented 5G networks.
