[Shanghai, China, March 3, 2021] Huawei and industry partners released the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper II: Building Virtual Private Networks for Electric Power at MWC Shanghai 2021. Huawei prepared this white paper in cooperation with the 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance (5GDNA), 5G Slicing Association (5GSA), China Southern Power Grid, Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute, Information & Communication Department of China Electric Power Research Institute, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Information and Telecommunications Department of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd, State Grid Qingdao Power Supply Company, Nanjing Nari Information Communication Technology of Nari Group, and Guangdong Planning and Designing Institute of Telecommunications.
As increasingly more application benchmarks are being launched, 5G + Smart Grid is rapidly transforming the future of the power industry. To accelerate the commercialization of 5G + Smart Grid, industry stakeholders have been conducting extensive research and practice into synergizing 5G technologies with the electric power industry. As a result, the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper II was drafted, which is an extension of the 5GDN white paper series and builds on 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper I. The 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper II is the industry's first white paper to propose the idea of constructing private WANs for specific verticals. By drawing on the best practices of 5GDN and smart grid application in the industry, this paper clarifies the overarching design principles for 5GDN-based smart grids and details the construction solutions for each subnet ((R)AN, TN, and CN) of a virtual private network for electric power. Ultimately, it serves as a reference for promoting 5G + Smart Grid and the application of 5G in more verticals.
More specifically, the white paper comprehensively focuses on private network construction, including the key concepts, deployment principles, network slice planning, service isolation, virtual private network construction, as well as operations and management involved. In terms of service isolation, it provides well-designed solutions for varied services in different power grid zones, including control and production zones as well as information and management zones.
The paper also advises the use of operators' public networks to create private networks for power grids, in addition to providing rights- and domain-based management. This allows power grid tenants to enjoy self-service and self-management via centralized capability exposure platforms, as well as smoothly purchase private network services.
As 5G + Smart Grid becomes more commercialized private electric power networks will become increasingly prevalent.
