In 5G, real-time communication remains indispensable and ushers in a brand-new development trend. First, in 5G, VoLTE becomes a must rather than an optional solution. This will bring a surge in the VoLTE penetration rate and stimulate collaboration among operators. In addition, as VoLTE audio & video services become easier to access on 5G networks, the development of IMS data channels will continue to gain momentum.

Second, 3GPP R16 has defined service flows involving IMS data channels. To deploy the 5G New Calling solution, operators only need to upgrade the IMS to support IMS data channels. IMS data channels and audio & video channels are established simultaneously. Any content, from texts, images, and videos to location and interaction information, can be streamed through IMS data channels. This will facilitate service innovation in the future. Currently, the 5G New Calling solution applies to services, including Multimedia CLIP, Visual Menus, Screen Sharing, and AR-based Marking. These services improve the individual user experience and fit the requirements of customers from different industry.

Zhang Hao, deputy director of Department of Network and IT Technology, China Mobile Research Institute, said “The 5G New Calling solution uses IMS data channel architecture and can be deployed on the top of an IMS network. The solution offers an opportunity for China Mobile to build a unified voice service platform and expand our service portfolio. China Mobile is looking forward to working with more industry partners to promote the development of new 5G voice services, unlock the potential of the voice market, and boost industry development.”

Zhao Yue, President of the CS&IMS Domain of Huawei Cloud Core Network Product Line, said “We are glad to work with China Mobile on the 5G New Calling solution. With 5G, all industries are now requesting for a better voice call experience. Huawei has been leading VoLTE development for years and has accumulated extensive experience in providing communication services. Huawei is sparing no effort to assist operators to roll out new services, upgrade the user experience, and explore uncharted new markets with 5G.”

Over the years, Huawei has made full use of its technological advantages in the voice industry and is committed to working with operators and industry partners to provide an advanced call experience for global users. By the end of 2020, Huawei had helped global operators build more than 100 commercial VoLTE networks, providing HD video call services for more than 1 billion users.

Currently, China Mobile and Huawei have made key progress in pilot projects with the 5G New Calling solution. In the near future, 5G New Calling services will become prevalent, improving both the communication efficiency and experience in all industry sectors.

MWC Shanghai 2021 runs from February 23 to February 25 in Shanghai, China. Huawei showcases its products and solutions at booths E10, E50, and E90 in Hall N1 in the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). For more information, please visit https://carrier.huawei.com/cn/events/mwcs2021.
