2020 was an unusual year and at DE-CIX, in addition to celebrating our 25th anniversary, we got to witness first hand how our lives moved to online. We saw the average global data traffic rising between 15% and 30%, depending on the region, in Frankfurt the year-on-year peak data throughput increased 27% – the biggest increase ever – to over 10 Terabits per second (Tbps). Many of our other Internet Exchanges crossed the 200 and 500 Gigabit per second (Gbps) line for the first time.
Connecting over 2,100 networks
The number of connected networks rose to over 2,100, and for the first time we connected over 1,000 networks in Frankfurt. We opened six new Internet Exchanges in Athens, Barcelona, Chicago, Richmond, the Ruhr region, and Singapore. SEECIX in Athens, Greece and Ruhr-CIX in the Ruhr region of Germany are operated as part of our new DE-CIX as a Service program.
