Huawei Makes Breakthrough in Ultra-High-Speed Transmission and Publishes a Post-Deadline Paper at ECOC 2020

[Brussels, December 11, 2020] Huawei has made another major breakthrough in ultra-high-speed transmission, becoming the first to achieve 220 GBaud ultra-high-speed signal transmission (the highest symbol rate in commercial product is around 95 GBaud for the 800G single wavelength transmission, and the highest symbol rate recorded in previous academic research is 192 GBaud). This paves the way for applying transmission rates that exceed 1 Tbit/s per wavelength.

The findings were published in a post-deadline paper (PDP) by Huawei at the European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) 2020. At this year’s event, 460 papers were reviewed, among which only seven papers were selected as PDPs. Huawei is the only Chinese equipment vendor whose achievement has been recognized.

In the ultra-high-speed fiber optical transmission field, increasing the signal symbol rate is crucial to achieving a large-capacity transmission system. This is particularly the case as the single-wavelength transmission rate evolves towards 1 Tbit/s, and therefore requires a transmission system based on a high symbol rate that can deliver better transmission.

Huawei’s Munich optical network R&D team generated a high symbol rate signal that went beyond 200 Gbaud for the first time. By using a new high-bandwidth IQ modulator and nonlinear digital signal processing algorithms , they have achieved the highest optical symbol rate to date of 220 Gbaud. This broke the previous reported record of 192 Gbaud and lays the foundation for the evolution of the single-wavelength rate towards 1 Tbit/s in the future. As a reference, today’s highest commercial line rate of single wavelength 800G transmission is only based on the symbol rate of around 95 Gbaud.

“Our experiment marks a significant milestone in fiber optical communication research. 10 years after the first generation of coherent optical products based on 28 Giga symbols per second, we were able to scale up the symbol rate by a factor of almost 8, using AI-powered advanced signal processing and the latest high bandwidth components. This will pave the way for future multi-Terabit interfaces for metro and backbone networks,” said Dr. Maxim Kuschnerov, director of the Optical & Quantum Laboratory in Munich.

Thanks to long-term research and investment in the ultra-high-speed field, Huawei has enjoyed multiple achievements in ultra-high-speed optical transmission. In February 2020, Huawei released the industry’s first 800G ultra-high-speed optical module in London, and broke the world record by delivering 48 Tbit/s per-fiber speed. These 800G ultra-high-speed optical modules are used all across Huawei’s optical transmission (OptiXtrans) products, covering various application scenarios such as backbone transmission, metro transmission, and data center interconnection. This significantly improves the transmission performance of optical networks and further reduces the per-bit transmission cost.

Huawei’s ultra-high-speed transmission solution has received global recognition. An analysis report by Omdia, the most authoritative consulting firm in the global telecom industry, reported that Huawei’s ultra-high-speed transmission solution maintained the biggest market share of the 100G+ high-speed transmission market (in Q2 2020), and its global shipments has reached 39.1%.

Huawei will continue to boost investment in ultra-high-speed transmission technologies and provide the industry’s largest fiber transmission capability to help customers handle the surging network traffic in the F5G era and create thriving industries.
